At 2342 hours the Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company, along with mutual aid, were dispatched to the 600 block of Arbour Drive in Arbour Park for a residential fire. Crews arrived on scene to find a two story single family dwelling with fire showing from an attached garage. The fire was quickly controlled, searches were negative, and there were no reported civilian or fire service injuries. Occupants were alerted by a smoke detector and were able to evacuate prior to fire department arrival, they were not displaced. Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Co of Newark DE recently hosted a ceremony for their 2018 Fire Prevention Poster & Essay contest winners.
Children from many Newark area grade schools competed in the annual State of Delaware Poster & Essay contest. Members of the fire department poured over hundreds of local entries. 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners were chosen from each grade level. Grades kindergarten through grade 3 designed posters depicting themes for each grade. Grades 4 through 8 wrote essays about a topics chosen for each grade. This year's themes were by the chosen by the Life Safety Committee of the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association.
Each Newark winner was presented with a certificate and a money award at the annual ceremony held in the Aetna Banquet Hall. The fire department has been hosting these awards ceremonies for more than 40 years.

Congratulations to Aetna Cadet Firefighter Tucker Greene who has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout! Tucker worked extremely hard in school, with the Scouts, and around the firehouse and we are very proud of his achievement. Chief Bowerson and numerous members were on hand to congratulate him this evening. Congrats Tucker!

At 1009 hours, Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company along with mutual aid from Christiana Fire, Mill Creek Fire Company - Stations 2&21, Minquas Fire, Hockessin Fire Company - Station 19, and New Castle County Paramedics were dispatched to the unit block of Waltham Street in Kimberton Townhouses for a residential fire with entrapment. Crews arrived on scene to find fire showing from a 2 story townhouse and a trapped occupant hanging out of a 2nd floor rear window. The occupant was rescued by ground ladder and was transported to Christiana Hospital by Aetna ambulance and NCCEMS in critical condition. Simultaneously crews worked to extinguish the fire and search for any additional victims. One Aetna firefighter was transported to Christiana Hospital for minor burns. The incident was placed under control at 1051 hours. Assistant Chief Fleming had Newark Command and the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office is handling the investigation. Additional details will be released when they become available.
