Tonight Aetna hosted Nikki Testa from the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (also a part-time Aetna firefighter/EMT) who taught her "Stop the Bleed" bleeding control class. Students had the opportunity to get hands-on training with tourniquet application as well as wound packing. These basic skills can make a huge difference for patients during every day emergencies and natural disasters. For more information about bleeding control check out and if your organization is interested in hosting a similar "Stop the Bleed" class contact DEMA. Prepare Delaware

At 1239 hours the Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company was dispatched to assist the Singerly Fire Company of Elkton, MD on a residential structure fire in the 1700 block of Appleton Road. Singerly crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire showing from a single story, single family dwelling which had been divided into at least two apartments. Engine 9 arrived as the second engine and advanced a hand line into the left apartment while Singerly's engine advanced a line into the right apartment. Crews were met with a well advanced fire requiring Ladder 9's crew to ventilate the roof in order for crews to advance inside. During the firefight, two Aetna firefighters sustained minor injuries. Both were transported to Christiana Hospital by Singerly Fire Company ambulances and were treated and subsequently released. We are extremely fortunate that the injuries were not more severe. Thank you to Christiana Fire and Elsmere Fire Company No.1 who covered our district during the incident, as well as all of those who reached out to offer their support. The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal along with the ATF are handling the investigation.
