Past News 5/25/08 - Garage Burns on Otts Chapel Road On May 25th at 11:53 Hrs, Aetna, along with Singerly Fire Company (Cecil County 3-13-14), was dispatched for a garage fire at 1636 Otts Chapel Road. As units began responding, a large column of black smoke could be seen from several miles away. Deputy 9 arrived at 12:00 and reported a 60'x60' garage well involved with exposure to a similar building on the D side. Deputy 9 established Newark Command and requested a working building fire dispatch as well as a Tanker response from Singerly. That would add Christiana Fire Company (3-6-12) and Mill Creek Fire Company (2-21) to the incident. Engine 9-5 arrived and due to no hydrants in the area, a 5" supply line was dropped from the end of the lane. The crew was instructed to place a 1 3/4" hand line in service in order to provide exposure protection. Engine 10-5 was next to arrive, and they dropped an addition 5" supply line up a second lane. 10-5's crew then began assisting 9-5's crew with exposure protection. Due to the lack of water supply, Newark Command requested additional Tankers to the scene. Tankers from Hockessin Fire Company (19), Port Penn Fire Company (29), and Chesapeake City Fire Company (Cecil County 2-12) all made the response. Squrt 7 arrived and was instructed to place the boom in service for extinguishment of the fire building. Crews intermittently ran out of water until Tanker shuttle operations were in place. Once sufficient water supply was established, multiple hand lines from 9-5 and 10-5 as well as the boom from Squrt 7 were utilized to extinguish the main fire building. Crews also extinguished a 10'x10' shed and several vehicles that had been on the exterior of the fire building. Damage to the D exposure was limited to the exterior only. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, Command placed the incident under control at 12:48. Command began releasing mutual aid units as soon as possible. Aetna crews remained on scene for another 2 hours assisting the Fire Marshal, hitting hot spots, and performing overhaul. All units were clear the scene at 14:46. Units on scene: 7-4, Squrt 7, 8-2, 9-5, 10-5, A-8, A-9, EMS 9, Aetna Fire Police, 3-4, 21-6, Tanker 19, Tanker 29, Cecil County Squrt 13, Tanker 13, Tanker 2, Tanker 12, NCC Paramedics, and DSFM. 5/23/08 - Rollover Crash Injures One On May 23rd at 15:08 Hrs, Aetna, along with multiple New Castle County Paramedic units, was dispatched for a MVC reported with a rollover and entrapment at the intersection of Library Avenue and Wyoming Road. Ambulances A8 and A9, EMS 9, And Engine 9-5 all made the response. Crews arrived at 15:11, finding a 3 vehcile crash with an SUV on its' driver side. All occupants were able to exit their vehicles prior to the arrival of the fire department units. A-8's crew provided patient care to the driver of the SUV. That patient had a serious hand injury, but ALS was not required. All ALS ended up being cancelled off of the incident. The driver's from the other 2 vehicles involved both ended up not requiring transport to the hospital, even though 1 of the cars did sustain severe passenger side damage. A-8 transported their patient to Christiana ER and A-9 obtained a refusal. The crew from 9-5 handled fluid control and debris removal. The incident was placed under control at 15:14 and all units were clear by 15:35. 5/15/08 - Engine Assists on 2 Fires in Elkton On May 15th at 04:03 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched for an Engine to assist Singerly Fire Company (Cecil County 3-13-14) on a working house fire at 123 Midland Drive in Elkton, MD. Engine 9-3 made the response. Units from Singerly arrived to find fire showing from the rear of a 2 story house. 9-3 arrived at 04:22. The crew was tasked with advancing a 1 3/4" hand line to the 2nd floor in order to assist with extinguishment. Once inside the crew split, with half performing a secondary search of the 2nd floor, and the other half opening up the kitchen and attic area. Areas of hidden fire were found and extinguished by the crew. The secondary search proved negative. As the crew exited the structure, command advised that 9-3 was needed to respond to a shed fire. 9-3 was sent a few blocks away to 149 South Tartan Drive. 9-3 arrived at 05:09, just behind an Engine from the Rising Sun Fire Company (Cecil County 8-18-28). Crews found smoke coming from a shed in the rear yard. A hand line was placed in service and quick work was made of the small fire. 9-3's crew assisted on scene until being cleared to return to quarters at 05:36. 5/11/08 - Engine, Rescue, and Ladder Assist On May 11th at 11:26 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched for an Engine and Rescue to assist Christiana Fire Company (3-6-12) on a house fire in the area of Christiana Road and Brownleaf Road. Engine 9-3 and Rescue 8 made the response. Engine 12-5 was first to arrive, finding a 1 story house with fire showing from the A/B corner. The correct address was found to be 1003 Green Tree Road, and the working fire dispatch was requested. This would bring Ladder 9 to the scene. 9-3 arrived as the 2nd engine at 11:37. 9-3's crew was tasked with advancing a back up 1 3/4" hand line into the structure in order to assist the crew from 12-5. Both crews ended up being held in the living room area due to inadequate water pressure on both hand lines. While waiting for water, 9-3's crew began a primary search and performed horizontal ventilation. Rescue 8 arrived at 11:42. The crew from Rescue 8 was tasked with removing windows on the C and D sides of the structure. The crew also secured the gas service. Eventually a 1 3/4" hand line had to be pulled off of 9-3. That lines were exchanged and Christiana crews were able to extinguish the fire. Once the fire was knocked down, 9-3's crew assisted with opening walls and ceilings. While those crews were still operating inside, the crews from Rescue 8 and Ladder 9 went to the roof and performed vertical ventilation. Command placed the fire under control at 12:02. Aetna crews operated on scene until being released at 13:09. 5/11/08 - Mother's Day Flower Sale The Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company hosted a Mother's Day flower sale at Station 8 on Saturday and Sunday. The flower sale was in coordination with Leon's Garden World of Newark. Aetna would like to thank Leon's Garden World for their very generous donation made from the proceeds of the sale. Please consider them for your local hotel and conference room needs. 5/7/08 - Wilderness EMS/Rescue class and Drill On Wednesday May 7th the Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company held a wilderness EMS/Rescue class and drill at the Judge Morris Estate. The scenario included a injured biker who feel down a 50 foot embankment who needed to be located and removed. The class and drill included the instruction and use of GPS, stokes basket, mule, basic ropes and mechanical advantage systems. Over thirty members participated in the class.
Residents of New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties have recently been contacted by telephone solicitors asking for donations for local volunteer fire departments or to help injured firefighters. The solicitations are not sanctioned by any volunteer fire department in the state of Delaware or the DVFA, according to Ron Marvel, president of the DVFA. "No Delaware fire department asks for donations via telephone solicitation," Marvel said. "If you receive a telephone solicitation do not give them any personal information such as a credit card number or other financial data. Instead get the caller's name, telephone number and address, and then contact your local law enforcement authority. "These solicitations are not approved by your local volunteers and none of the money collected goes to local volunteer fire departments," Marvel added. Source: Kyle Parsons / WBOC-TV 16 / CBS 4/18/08 - Rollover on Fox Den Road On April 18th at 07:28 Hrs, Aetna, along with Medic 3, ALS 21, and Trooper 4, was dispatched for a MVC reported with a rollover in the area of 97 Fox Den Road. Ambulance B-9 and Engine 9-5 made the response along with the ALS units. B-9 and 9-5 arrived to find a single vehicle overturned and off the roadway. The patient was already being treated by Paramedics that were on scene. Crews worked together to remove the patient from the car. The patient was then packaged and loaded into B-9. B-9 then moved the patient to the LZ for Trooper 4. The patient was subsequently loaded into Trooper 4, and then flown to Christiana ER. The incident was placed under control at 07:51 and all units were clear by 07:59. 4/14/08 - Fire In the Art Room On April 14th at 12:08 Hrs, Aetna, along with Christiana Fire Company (3-6-12), Mill Creek Fire Company (2-21), and Cranston Heights Fire Company (14), was dispatched for a building fire at the Gauger - Cobbs Middle School located at 50 Gender Road. Engine 9-5 and Ambulance A-9 were first to arrive at 12:16, with 9-5 taking up position at the fire department connection. Crews were advised that there was a fire in the first floor art room, and it may be contained by the sprinkler system. 9-5's crew entered the building with a 1 3/4" high rise pack, in case a hose line would be needed to be placed in service. Crews made their way to the art room, where significant smoke conditions were found. Upon further investigation, a charred tarp on top of a large table was found. One sprinkler head was activated, which had extinguished the fire. Additional crews from Squrt 7, Quint 21-7, Ladder 9, and Engine 3-4 assisted with checking for extension, securing the sprinkler system, and extensive ventilation. Deputy 9 had command and he placed the incident under control at 12:26. A total of 3 patients were treated for minor smoke inhalation, and all were transported to Christiana ER by Ambulance A-7. All units were clear by 13:14 with the scene being turned over to the State Fire Marshal for investigation. 4/12/08 - MVC with Entrapment On the afternoon of April 12th, Aetna members were preparing for the City of Newark's 250th anniversary parade. Due to this, Belvedere Fire Company Rescue 30 came down to station 9 in order to provide coverage. At 13:15 Engine 9-5 and Rescue 30 handled a stove fire at 35 Kenmar Drive. After clearing that incident, Aetna, along with Medic 3, was dispatched at 13:40 for a MVC reported with a rollover at the intersection of Capitol Trail and Darwin Drive. Ambulances A-7 and A-10, 9-5, and Rescue 30 responded immediately, followed shortly by Rescue 8. A-10 was first to arrive at 13:44, finding a 2 vehicle crash with 1 SUV on its' driver's side. A-10 reported that there was 1 subject trapped. 9-5 and Rescue 30 arrived and both crews began stabilization of the vehicle. Rescue 8 arrived a minute later and also assisted with vehicle stabilization. Once the vehicle was stabilized, crews began extrication. Holmatro tools off of 9-5 and Rescue 30 were placed in service for the extrication. First the vehicle's windshield and sunroof were removed. Then crews began cutting the passenger side A-post and a cut was made at rear of the sunroof near the B-post. Once those cuts were completed, relief cuts were made on the driver side roof area so that the section of roof could be folded down. Once the roof was folded down, the driver was removed from the vehicle. Extrication was completed at 13:58. That patient was transported to Christiana ER by A-10 and Medic 3 with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle involved refused medical treatment. The incident was placed under control at 14:01. Crews remained on scene picking up equipment and removing debris from the roadway. All fire department units were clear by 14:14 and the scene was turned over to Delaware State Police. 3/18/08 - Engine Assists on Shed Fire On March 18th at 0037 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched for an engine to assist West Grove Fire Company (Chester County 12-22) with an out building on fire in the rear of 11 Glen Oak Drive. Engine 9-3 made the response to Pennsylvania. 9-3 arrived on scene just behind the first engine from West Grove. Crews found the remains of a shed burning in the backyard. The crew from 9-3 assisted West Grove with extinguishment and overhaul for approximately 20 minutes before being released. 3/17/08 - Rollover Crash Leaves 4 Injured Just prior to 2 A.M. on March 17th, Aetna, along with Medic 3, was dispatched for a MVC reported with a rollover at the intersection of East Chestnut Hill Road and Stanley Plaza Boulevard. Ambulances A-7, A-10, Engines 9-5, 10-5, and Rescue 8 all made the response. Units began arriving on scene at 0151. Crews found a single vehicle crash with a car on its' roof, and all occupants already out of the vehicle. EMS crews found that there was a total of 4 subjects injured, and requiring transport to the hospital. All 4 patients were packaged, with 2 being loaded into A-7 and 2 being loaded into A-10. Both ambulances transported the 4 patients to Christiana ER with non-life threatening injuries. The scene was placed under control at 0203. All fire department units were clear by 0243 and the scene was turned over to Delaware State Police for investigation. 3/16/08 - Another Small Fire is Handled Quickly On March 16th at 1539 Hrs, Aetna, along with Singerly fire Company (Cecil County 3-13-14) and Christiana Fire Company (3-6-12), was dispatched for a Multi-Residential Building fire at 433 Christina Mill Drive. Ambulances A-7 and A-10 were at Station 7, and they responded immediately. A-7 and A-10 arrived at 1541, just as Engine 9-5 and Ladder 9 went responding. The crew from A-7 could see that there was a small fire on a second floor balcony. A bystander advised that he had already knocked on the door of that apartment and received no answer. The crews from A-7 and A-10 grabbed a fire extinguisher and haligan bar and went up to the apartment. Both crews began attempting forcible entry to the apartment. Once entry was gained, a dry chemical fire extinguisher was utilized to extinguish the small fire in a flower bed on the balcony. Even though the fire did shatter the sliding glass door, it did not enter the apartment. Once 9-5 and Ladder 9 arrived, those crews advanced a booster line to the apartment. They wet down the area and checked for any extension. With no extension found, the incident was placed under control by Deputy 9 at 1549. All units were clear by 1603 and the scene was turned over to building maintenance and Newark Police. Units on scene: A-7, A-10, 9-5, Ladder 9, and Newark Police 3/13/08 - MVC with Ejection in Glasgow On March 13th at 0737 Hrs, Aetna, along with multiple ALS units and Trooper 4, was dispatched for a MVC with a rollover at the intersection of Glasgow Avenue and Pulaski Highway (Route 40). Ambulances A-9, A-10, and Engine 9-5 made the response. Paramedic 1782 was first to arrive at 0741. She found that there was a 2 vehicle crash with multiple patients, including 1 that had been ejected. Fire Board was advised that the ejected patient was a trauma code, and Trooper 4 would be utilized to fly the patient to the hospital. A-10 arrived at 0747, followed by 9-5 at 0749. Additional ALS, Trooper 4, and A-9 were all on scene by 0753. A-10's crew assisted Paramedic 1782 with the trauma code. A-9's crew began providing care to the 2 other occupants from the vehicle that the subject was ejected from. The crew from from 9-5 assessed the 2 occupants from the other vehicle that was involved. They would end up refusing transport to the hospital. Once trooper 4 landed, the trauma code was loaded by A-10's crew, and then flown by Trooper 4 to Christiana ER. The 2 additional patients were transported to Christiana ER by A-9 with Medic 5. 9-5's officer placed the incident under control at 0812. All units were clear by 0822, and the scene was turned over to Delaware State Police. Units on scene: A-9, A-10, 9-5, PM1782, PM665, ALS18, ALS24, Medic 5, Trooper 4, DSP, and Aetna Fire Police 3/7/08 - Crews Quickly Handle Small First Due Fire On March 7th at 1410 Hrs, Aetna, along with Singerly Fire Company (Cecil County 3-13-14) and Mill Creek Fire Company (2-21), was dispatched for a townhouse fire at 1 Patrick Henry Court in the Cherry Hill Manor Townhouse development. Engine 9-5 was on the road after clearing an investigation and responded immediately. Ladder 9 went responding 2 minutes later. While units were responding, Fire Board advised that Newark Police were on location reporting an active fire in the rear of the residence. With that report Christiana Fire Company (3-6-12) was added as the R.I.T. 9-5 laid a 5" supply line from a hydrant around the corner, and arrived onscene at 1415 with smoke showing from the rear of a 2 story end of the row. The crew from 9-5 placed a 1 3/4" hand line in service and advanced it into the structure. The resident was already outside and she advised that there was no one else inside. 9-5's officer did a walk around of the structure and located the fire in a small storage building that is connected to the rear of the structure. Ladder 9 and Deputy 8 arrived at 1416, with Deputy 8 taking the command. Ladder 9's crew handled laddering the structure as the hose team advanced to the storage room and extinguished the fire. All checks for extension were negative, so Deputy 8 placed the incident under control at 1419 holding 9-5 and the ladder. Crews stood by as the City Fire Marshal conducted his investigation. Once he was finished, overhaul of the fire room was completed. All units were clear the scene by 1459. 2/28/08 - First In-District Fire of 2008 Occurs in Brookside On February 28th at 10:20 Hrs, Aetna, along with Christiana Fire company (3-6-12) and Mill Creek Fire Company (2-21), was dispatced for a house fire at 46 Montvale Road in Brookside. Engine 9-5 and Ambulance A-7 were on the street within 3 minutes of dispatch. As units were responding, Fire Board advised that New Castle County Police were on scene reporting smoke showing. With that report, Cranston Heights fire Company (14) was added for the R.I.T., and NCC Medic 9 was added for the ALS stand by. 9-5 arrived at 10:28 and reported smoke showing from a 1 story SFD. The hydrant was close to the house, so a 5" supply line was hand stretched to it. 9-5's crew placed a 1 3/4" hand line in service through the front door. As the crew was entering, fire began venting from the attic on the B-side of the structure. The fire was found to be above the kitchen area, and a storage room. The crew from 9-5 began pulling ceiling in order to get to the fire. Rescue 3 was next to arrive at 10:30. Rescue 3's crew assisted with bringing in a 2nd 1 3/4" hand line as well as bringing in more hooks so more ceiling could be pulled. Once the ceiling had been pulled, both hand lines were utilized in order to extinguish the fire. The bulk of the fire was reported knocked down at 10:38. As additional crews from Engine 9-3, Engine 3-5, and Squrt 21 arrived, they assisted with interior operations. The incident was placed under control at 10:43. Crews worked for another hour and a half conducting overhaul and salvage operations. During the initial fire attack 1 firefighter sustained an electrical shock from the electric panel. He was transported to christiana ER for evaluation, and he was released later in the afternoon. All units were clear the scene by 12:16. Units on scene: 9-5, 9-3, A-7, A-9, Rescue 3, 3-5, Squrt 21, Rescue 14, Medic 9, NCCPD, and DSFM 2/22/08 - One Trapped On the Interstate At 0017 on February 22, 2008, Newark units were again dispatched for a reported MVC with entrapment, this one on I95 at the Maryland line. EMS 9 was the first Newark unit to arrive, and subsequently confirmed entrapment on one patient, and advised of an additional 5. As ambulances and Engine 9-5 arrived, patient care was initiated, and the trapped occupant was extricated. In all, units from Newark included Chief 98, Engine 9-5, Rescue 8, EMS 9, numerous Fire Police, and numerous BLS units. Additional units called to the scene were Light Truck 23, and ambulance from Christiana 3, and an ambulance from Singerly. The last Newark units cleared the scene at 0048. 2/21/08 - “Cut Job” On Henderson Hill Rd At 1956 on February 21, 2008, Newark stations were alerted along with Medic 3 for a reported accident at Clearview Ridge Blvd and Henderson Hill Rd, with a subject “not alert.” Engine 9-5, and 2 Newark ambulances arrived finding the single vehicle accident in the development, up over the curb, into a tree line. Both occupants of the vehicles were confined in the vehicle due to branches pinning their doors closed. The crew from the engine utilized the chain saw on board and did some trimming on the surrounding trees, providing patient access. The patients were removed, and were transported to CER. Units cleared by 2026. 2/20/08 - 29 People Removed in the East Tower At 0442 on Wednesday, February 20, 2004, units from Newark were dispatched to the East Christiana Tower for a reported elevator rescue, a relatively common occurrence for the city. Engine 9-5, Rescue 8, EMS 9, and UD1 responded and were advised by Fireboard that this was not a completely ordinary stalled elevator. This call consisted of two stalled elevators; elevator 1 containing 17 people, located between divisions 1 and 2, and elevator 2, containing 12 people, stuck between divisions 5 and 6. Upon arrival both crews assisted maintenance with the removal of all 29 occupants, of which 2 required medical attention by the university ambulance, UD1. Units from Newark cleared the scene at 0507. 2/16/08 & 2/17/08 - Training At 9 Between Calls After running a multitude of calls Saturday night including multiple, intoxicated assaults on fire protection systems and a failed arson attempt, Sunday continued with more alarm bells and numerous cardiac arrests throughout the district. Between calls, the members at station 9 found time to put the basement to good training use. In the evening hours, members reviewed search techniques, RIT operations, and crawled through an improvised maze and entanglement hazard. The engine and ladder crew on hand finished up training and dinner just in time to respond to a reported first due building fire at TGI Fridays. 2/13/08 - Another Maryland House Fire At 0054 on February 13, 2008, Newark stations were again alerted for an engine company to assist Elkton on a working house fire. While Engine 9-3 was en route, Deputy Chief 13 arrived on scene with smoke showing from side D, and requested an additional engine and rescue from Newark to be added to the box assignment. Rescue 8 and Engine 10-5 responded. Upon Engine 9-3’s arrival, the crew met with command, and was instructed to proceed to division 2 and open up the side D wall and attic. The crew from Rescue 8 assisted in salvage operations, and Engine 10-5 staged until being released by command. The last unit from Newark cleared by 0157. 2/10/08 - Engines 9-5 and 10-5 on Small Fire At Pizza Hut At 1952 on February 10, 2008, a box alarm was sounded for the Pizza Hut at 60 Mcintosh Plaza (Christiana's Local) for a reported building fire. With numerous companies already operating at a 2 Alarm fire in Christiana, Engines 9-5 and 10-5 responded. Engine 9-5 arrived on scene as the first due engine just behind Ladder 17. As Engine 9-5 was parking on side A, they were advised by Ladder 17 to bring a line into the structure. The crew advanced an 1 ¾" line into the establishment, and E9-5's operator hand stretched to the closest hydrant, securing a water supply. Inside, the crews from 17 and 9 found moderate smoke in the restaurant and began to open up. Engine 10-5 arrived and stood by as the RIT team. A small fire was found in an exterior wall, and was quickly extinguished after the crew from 9-5 secured the utilities. The scene was placed under control at 2019, and companies cleared by 2024. 2/6/2008 - Aetna Responds to MVC In Front Of Station 10 At approximately 20:30, while personnel from Aetna stations 7-8-9-10 participated in training evolutions, which included search and rescue, fire attack, outside operations, and incident command, an MVC occurred directly in front of station 10 on Old County Road involving 2 vehicles. Rescue 8 Captain reported the accident to fireboard and crews from Rescue 8 and station 10 quickly responded. Upon investigation, Chief 8-8B reported that we had multiple injuries. A-9, B9, and A12 responded. A-9 and B-9 transported patients to Christiana ER. All units cleared at 21:00. Units on Scene: Chief 8-8B, Deputy 10, Rescue 8, Engine 10-2, A-9, B-9, and A-12. 2/5/08 - Tractor Trailer Rolls On I-95 At 2057 on February 5, 2008, units from Newark and Medic 3 were dispatched to I-95 for the report of an overturned tractor trailer. Engine 9-5, A9, and Rescue 8 arrived on scene at the 896 on-ramp, Deputy 9 advised fireboard that the single, self-extricated patient was being evaluated by the crew of A9, and placed the scene under control. The driver was transported to CER by A9, and all units cleared by 2135. 2/2/08 - Polly Drummond Hill Road Crash with 1 Trapped On February 2nd at 20:21 Hrs, Aetna, along with Medic 3, was dispatched for a MVC with entrapment at the intersection of Polly Drummond Hill Road and Rankin Road. Ambulances A-9, B9, A-10, Engine 9-5, and Rescue 8 all made the response. Chief 9-8 was first to arrive. He found a 2 car crash and confirmed that a passenger in 1 of the vehicles was trapped. A-9, B-9, 9-5, and Medic 3 were all on scene by 20:29. The EMS crew began providing patient care to the occupants of both vehicles involved, while 9-5's crew set up for extrication. 9-5's crew stabilized the vehicle, and placed their Holmatro combination tool and cutter in service. The passenger side door was removed, and the patient was extricated in less than 5 minutes. A total of 3 patients were transported to Christiana ER by A-9 and B-9 with Medic 3. 9-8 placed the incident under control at 20:39. All Aetna units were clear by 20:57 with the scene being turned over to Delaware State Police for investigation. 2/1/08 - Frazer Road Crash Injures 1 On February 1st at 09:44 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched for a MVC with injuries at the intersection of Frazer Road and Frenchtown Road. Ambulances A-8, A-9, A-10, and Engine 9-5 all made the response. EMS Deputy 9 was first to arrive at 09:51, finding a 2 vehicle crash. 1 vehicle was in the middle of the intersection and the 2nd vehicle had ended up in a ditch. The force of the impact had sheared the driver side front wheel off of an SUV. After checking on both subjects involved, EMS Deputy 9 found that only 1 of them was injured and required transport to the hospital. With that the response was reduced to A-10 and 9-5. A-10 arrived at 09:55, and the crew began treating and packaging of the 1 patient. 9-5 arrived at 10:01 and assisted as needed. EMS Deputy 9 placed the incident under control at 10:01. A-10 transported 1 patient to Christiana ER for treatment. All units were clear by 10:34. 1/31/08 - SUV Burns on Fairway Road On January 31st at 02:49 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched for a vehicle fire with exposures to additional vehicles in front of 13 Fairway Road in the Hunters Crossing apartment complex. Engines 7-4, 9-3, and 10-5 all made the response. 9-3 was first to arrive, finding a Ford Explorer fully involved with exposure to a 2nd vehicle on right side of it. 9-3's crew placed the booster line in service, and started attacking the fire. 7-4 arrived and stood by a hydrant in case it was needed. 7-4's crew assisted 9-3 and the fire was extinguished in a matter of minutes. 9-3 placed the incident under control at 03:00 holding 9-3 and 7-4. A 3rd vehicle that had been parked on the left of the Explorer had also suffered damage, but it was moved by the owner prior to the fire departments arrival. All Aetna units were clear by 03:26, with the scene being turned over to New Castle County Police. 1/28/08 - Aetna Gets an Out of State Fire for the 2nd Day in a Row On January 28th at 15:38 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched for a engine to assist Singerly Fire Company of Elkton (Cecil County, MD 3-13-14) on a working house fire at 499 Delaware Avenue. Engine 9-3 made the response in 3 minutes. While responding the IC advised that there was 1 serious burn patient that would require helicopter transport to the hospital. 9-3 arrived to find a 2 story split level home that was well involved on the A/D corner. 9-3's crew reported to the IC, and they were instructed to go to the 2nd floor. All 5 members of the crew entered the 2nd floor via a ground ladder due to the stairs being in danger of collapsing. Once inside they began opening the walls and pulling ceiling in order to get to the fire. A 1 3/4" hand line was utilized to extinguish the fire once it had been exposed. Once the bulk of the fire was extinguished, all crew members exited the structure. After a short rehab, the crew was put back to work. They began overhaul on the exterior of the A nd B sides, as well as the inside of a camper trailer that had been involved. The fire in the camper had been extinguished by additional crews during 9-3's initial interior operations. After the exterior overhaul was completed, the crew was sent back to the 2nd floor for some overhaul. Once they were done overhaul on the 2nd floor, the IC advised that 9-3 could clear. 9-3 returned to quarters at 17:08. 1-27-08 - Aetna Sends 3 Engines to Assist at West Grove House Fire On January 27th at 21:37 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched for an engine company to assist the West Grove Fire Company (Chester County 12-22) on a house fire at 1431 Flint Hill Road. Engines 8-2 and 9-3 made the initial response. 9-3 arrived just behind West Grove Engine 12-1, finding fire on the roof of a large 2 story farm house. The crew from 9-3 was instructed to place a 1 3/4" hand line in service and start attacking the fire that was in the attic. As 8-2 arrived, their crew was sent in to assist 9-3's crew. Both crews began pulling ceiling and started knocking down the fire. Due to this incident being in a non-hydrant area, water supply soon became an issue. While the crews from Aetna were still operating inside, the water supply was depleted and all crews were ordered to evacuate the structure. Both crews then stood by outside until a tanker shuttle could be set up for water supply. During this time the fire intensified, and the 2nd floor became well involved. Eventually the IC requested a 2nd alarm, which would bring Engine 10-2 to the scene. Once the water supply was established, the crews from 8-2 and 9-3 re-entered the structure with 2 1 3/4" hand lines. Both crews operated on the 2nd floor, and they were able to knock down the fire. Once the fire was extinguished, the crews from 8-2, 9-3, and 10-2 assisted with overhaul operations. Aetna personnel operated on scene for over 3 hours, with all Aetna units being cleared at 01:13. 1-18-08 - MVC Involving 3 Vehicles On January 18 at 17:02, units from Newark were dispatched for a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Ogletown Rd. and Salem Chuch Rd. Engine 9-5 and numerous BLS units responded finding a three-vehicle accident on Rt. 4, just prior to the intersection. One vehicle impacted a pole and slid down an embankment into the near by woods. Prior to the arrival of Newark units, by standards pulled the driver of the van out through the passenger side. The crew from A9 assessed the patient, and transported her to CER. Newark units notified DP&L, and cleared by 1746. 1/8/08 - Small Fire at Klondike Kates On January 8th at 13:02 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched for a commercial fire alarm investigation at Klondike Kates Restaurant 158 East Main Street. Deputy 7 arrived at 13:06 finding the building still occupied and no alarm sounding. Deputy 7 investigated, and when he went into the basement he was met with a smoke condition and a burning odor. At this point he advised Fire Board to give him a full structure assignment, and began evacuating the building. Added to the response were Singerly Fire Company of Elkton (3-13-14), Mill Creek Fire Company (2-21), Hockessin Fire Company (19), and Medic 9 as well as Engine 23-2 (Minquas) and Ladder 17 (Five Points) who were on a cover assignment at Christiana Fire Company. Engine 9-5 arrived at 13:12 and the crew advanced a 1 3/4" hand line to the basement. As the hand line was being advanced, a 5" supply line was hand stretched to a hydrant across the street. Deputy 8 assumed command and Deputy 7 took over interior. 9-5's crew brought their hand line to the basement, and they were able to extinguish a small fire in a storage room. Engine 8-2 and Rescue 8 were next to arrive. 8-2's crew advanced a back up hand line in case it was needed, and Rescue 8's crew was assigned to search the rest of the building to ensure that all occupants were out. Interior reported the fire extinguished with no extension, so Deputy 8 placed the incident under control at 13:21 holding the units that were on scene. Crews then handled salvage operations and assisted FM-90 as needed. All Aetna units were clear by 14:22 and the scene was turned over to FM-90. 1/4/08 - MVC with Trauma Alert On January 4th at 10:44 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched for a MVC at the intersection of South College Avenue and Welsh Tract Road. Ambulances A-8, A-9, and Engine 9-5 made the response. A-8 and A-9 arrived on scene at 10:46, finding a 2 vehicle rear end collision. The striking vehicle received heavy front end damage from the crash. As EMS crews began assessing patients, they found that the front seat passenger from that car had a traumatic head injury. ALS was requested for this patient, which added Medic 8 to the response. 9-5 arrived at 10:51, and the crew began assisting the crews that were on scene. The patient with the head injury was quickly packaged, and was loaded into A-8 for transport. A-8 transported that patient to Christiana ER and met up with Medic 8 along the way. This patient would end up being a trauma alert. There was 2 more patients from that vehicle that had minor injuries, and 1 patient from the vehicle that had been rear ended. The patient from the vehicle that had been rear ended was assessed by A-9's crew. It was determined that ALS was needed for that patient as well, so Medic 7 was alerted to respond. The patient was packaged and loaded into A-9 for transport. A-9 transported that patient to Christiana ER and met up Medic 7. The 2 remaining patients had only minor injuries, and a 3rd BLS unit was requested to transport them to the hospital. Ambulance B-12 (Christiana Fire Company) responded and transported both patients to Christiana ER. 9-5 placed the incident under control at 11:10. Once the road was clear of debris the scene was turned over to Newark Police and 9-5 cleared at 11:18. 1/4/08 - Aetna Responds to Another MVC with a Vehicle Into a Building On January 4th at 06:57 Hrs, Aetna, along with Medic 3 and the Claymont Fire Company (13) Collapse Team, was dispatched for a MVC with entrapment and vehicle into the structure at 738 E.Chestnut Hill Road. Chief 9-8 arrived a 07:01 and reported that he had a mini-van into a muffler shop with the sole occupant trapped. He also advised that there were acetylene tanks possibly leaking and requested a full structure response. Christiana Fire Company (3-6-12), Mill Creek Fire Compnay (2-21), and Singerly Fire Company of Elkton, MD (3-13-14) were then dispatched to assist. Ambulance A-8 was next to arrive, and they began providing patient care for the driver of the mini van. Engine 9-5 arrived at 07:07 and the crew set up for extrication. The booster line was also placed in service for protection. The crew from 9-5 placed their Holmatro combination tool and cutters in service in order to remove the passenger side sliding door from the van. Extrication of the driver was completed within 5 minutes. She was transported to Christiana ER by A-8 and Medic 3. Once the extrication was completed, 9-8 held the response to the Aetna units that were on scene. It was determined that the inital crash had occurred at the intersection of E.Chestnut Hill Road and Salem Church Road. The mini-van was rear-ended and then travelled several hundred feet through a parking lot before striking the building. A total of 4 vehicles had been involved. 2 subjects from 1 of the other vehicles had minor injuries and they were transported to Christiana ER by Ambulance A-9. 9-8 placed the incident under control at 07:18 and all Aetna units were clear by 07:45. 1/3/08 - Rescue Assists on Serious MVC in Pike Creek On January 3rd at 15:22 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched for Rescue 8 to assist Mill Creek Fire Company (2-21) on a MVC with entrapment on Linden Hill Road at Skyline Drive. First units on scene arrived to find a 2 vehicle head-on crash, with 4 patients trapped and 2 patients ejected. Multiple BLS and ALS units from the surrounding area were also called in to assist. Rescue 8 made the response at 15:30 and arrived at 15:37. Once on scene the crew was tasked with assisting EMS units with patient packaging. The crew assisted B-14 (Cranston Heights) and B-30 (Belvedere) with packaging and loading a total of 3 patients for transport to Christiana ER. Once their tasks were completed, Rescue 8 was cleared by the IC at 15:48. 1/3/08 - Aetna Responds to Their First Fatal Crash of the Year On January 3rd at 14:49 Hrs, EMS 9 contact Fire Board and advised them that he was on location at Capitol Trial and Possum Park Road with a MVC with entrapment and 1 subject unconscious. Aetna and Medic 9 were then dispatched for the MVC. The crash involved a small car that had been struck on the passenger side by a large pick-up truck. The passenger of the car was unconscious and in respiratory arrest. The driver of the car was able to exit the vehicle on his own after the crash. A-8 and Medic 9 arrived next at 14:50, and began working on the critically injured passenger. Engine 9-5 and Ambulance A-9 were next to arrive at 14:55. It was determined that the critical patient needed to be rapidly extricated, so 9-5's crew assisted the EMS units with patient removal. A-9's crew began treating the driver of the truck. A-10 arrived at 14:56 and that crew began treating the driver of the car. A-9's crew determined that the driver of the truck had altered mental status, so an additional Medic unit was requested bringing Medic 3 to the scene. Once the patient from the car was removed, she was packaged and transported to Christiana ER by A-8 and Medic 9 as a trauma code. A-9 and Medic 3 transported the truck driver to Christiana ER as well. A-10 handled transport of the of the driver of the car, who had only minor injuries. He also went to Christiana ER. The incident was placed under control at 15:05 and all units were clear the scene by 15:20. The scene was turned over to Delaware State Police for the investigation. Unfortunately the passenger of the car succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the ER. Units on scene: EMS 9, A-8, A-9, A-10, 9-5, Medic 9, Medic 3, Aetna Fire Police, and Delaware State Police 1/1/08 - MVC with Car Into House On January 1st at 12:02 Hrs, Aetna, along with Medic 9 and Claymont Fire Company's (13) Collapse Team, was dispatched for a MVC reported with entrapment and a vehicle into the structure. Ambulance A-10 was first to arrive at 12:06, finding a car petruding from the front of a split-level residence.. The crew from A-10 was able to assist the driver of the car out of his vehicle. They also made sure that everyone was out of the house. Engine 9-5 was next to arrive at 12:07. Deputy 9, who was the officer of 9-5, took command and 9-5's crew established a safe area. A-10's crew advised Deputy 9 that the driver of the car was not injured, so all ALS was cancelled. The driver ended up refusing transport to the hospital. Once the safe area was established crews stood by until the Collapse Team arrived. Once the Collapse Team arrived, they handled shoring up the structure. Aetna crews assisted as needed until the car was removed and the house was shored up. Deputy 9 placed the incident under control at 14:59. All units were clear the scene by 15:10 and the house was turned over to the City of Newark Building Inspector. |
