12/19/03 16:45 Fatal MVC w/Pin @ Paper Mill Rd & Old Paper Mill

Just about 4:45 in the afternoon, Aetna was alerted to an MVC with two subjects not alert near the Old Paper Mill on Paper Mill Rd. A8 and B9 made the response with E9-1 and Rescue 8 following. Units arrived on scene to find a severely damaged vehicle that had struck a pole at a high rate of speed. The pole was snapped in half and resting on the vehicle which had two patients trapped inside, one was in Trauma Arrest (passenger) and the other was classified a Trauma Code (driver). E9-1 and R8 quickly extricated the driver while units performed CPR on the passenger. Trooper 4 flew the driver to CER and the passenger was transported to CER by ground where he was pronounced. Chief 98 (Meredith) had command.

12/17/03 15:14 MVC w/Entrapment @ Frenchtown Rd&MD Line

At 15:14 hours, Aetna was alerted to an MVC with entrapment in the south-east end along Frenchtown Rd. E9-1, Rescue 8, B9, A7, and County medics made the response to find the two-vehicle accident at the MD state line with a driver trapped. E9-1 utilized the paladin tool to quickly open both the driver and back-seat doors. The driver was trasported by air via LifeNet to CER and another was transported by ground. Assistant Chief 98B (Bowerson) had command and Assistant Chief 78C (Daniels) had the extrication.

12/13/03 10:11 Fatal MVC I95NB @ Astra Zeneca

At 10:11 hrs, Aetna was alerted to an MVC with entrapment in the north-bound lanes of Interstate 95. E9-1, B9, A8, B3, and NCCo medics responded on the call to find multiple vehicles involved. Due to the significant damage of one vehicle, B3 was able to force open the driver door to access the reported trapped driver. Apparantly, a south-bound car crossed the center median and struck several north-bound vehicles. A 25 yof driver of the north-bound car was transported to CER where she died several days later. The driver of the south-bound car was transported to CER as a Trauma Alert and is in stable condition. Chief 98 (Meredith had command).

12/11/03 09:00 Working Building Fire @ Martin Hall

At 9 in the morning, Aetna was alerted to a building fire in English Village apartments with Mill Creek and Hockessin as mutual aid. The initial report was a rear bedroom, but Fireboard soon re-dispatched the alarm as a working fire bringing Christiana and Rescue 14 as the RIT assignment. Mill Creek's E2-6 arrived in the rear reporting heavy fire and began to flow water from an 1-3/4" attack line through the outside window. E9-3 arrived in the front shortly after and began to make an aggressive interior attack. Wind speeds were reported above 15 mph and the fire had already taken hold of two apartment units and part of the roof. E8-2, E9-1, E7-2, T19 and E12-5 all arrived while E9-3 was making their attack and assisted with additonal lines, water supply, and exposure protection. E2-6, E9-3, and E8-2 all made their attack into the wind on a fire that had heavily taken hold and succeeded in stopping the spread of fire including to an attached downwind building. Assistant Chief 9-8B (Debold) had command, Assistant Chief 7-8C (Daniels) had the rear, and Assistant Chief 9-8C (Bowerson) had the interior. All units were clear by noon.

12/04/03 08:31 House Fire @ 34 Meadow Lane

E9-1 was clearing a call in Todd Estates when Aetna was alerted to a house fire in Brookside with Christiana as mutual aid. E9-1 arrived onscene within minutes to advise smoke showing and request a working fire. This alerted Mill Creek as an engine company and RIT company, Elkton as an engine company, and cover-ups for the stations. As E12-5 and E7-4 were responding to the scene, E9-1 advanced a 1-3/4" handline to find fire extending through the house from a dryer. Crew members performed a quick knockdown and search of the residence. Assistant Chief 9-8C (Bowerson) had command of the fire and units cleared approximately 2 hours later.

11/20/03 22:46 MVC + Entrapment @ Rt 896 & OBP

Within a few hours of clearing the house fire, Aetna was alerted to an MVC at the intersection of Route 896 and Old Baltimore Pike. While E9-1, A7, and A9 were responding, the call was upgraded to possible entrapment. E9-1 arrived on-scene to find a tractor-trailer had rear-eneded an Explorer at a high rate of speed causing a chain collision and entraping several occupants. Assistant Chief 8-8B (Hendricks) arrived on scene as E9-1 began opening up the vehicle from both the driver and passenger side. Rescue 8 also made the response and assisted in the treatment and packaging of several traumas. One patient was flown to CER and several others were taken via A7, A9, and UD1. Deputy 8 (Kreer) and Chief 9-8 (Kavanagh) also responded on the call and assisted in operations.

Rush hour traffic contributed to an MVC E9-1 was handling when Aetna was alerted to a house fire with Mill Creek as engine company mutual aid. Due to Mill Creek getting their own box alarm soon after, Hockessin (19) was added to the call. E9-1 arrived reporting fire in the bathroom and advanced an 1-3/4" handline while E8-2 backed them up. E9-3 laid a 5" supply, Deputy 8 (Kreer) took command, and Assistant Chief 8-8C (Campbell) took the interior. Fire was contained to the bathroom with extension into the walls and attic. Units cleared by 18:30. During this time, Ladder 9's crew handled multiple MVCs in district.

For the second fire of the day, E9-1 was clearing a MVC with A7 when Aetna was dispatched to assist Mill Creek on a townhouse fire. Being less than a mile away, E9-1 arrived within minutes while units were responding from their stations. Finding fire venting from the kitchen cabinets and walls, E9-1 kept the fire in check with the water can while a 1-3/4" handline was run. Fire was found and extinguished within the walls and Deputy 21 held the scene to E9-1, Rescue 21, and 21-7. E9-1 was released by 20:55hrs.

Aetna was hosting its NREMT-B course and advanced probationary training when it was alerted to a house fire in the south-end. As E9-3 was responding, 7 Capt 1 (Kanich) arrived on scene reporting smoke showing from a basement fire. E9-3 laid a 5" supply and advanced a 1-3/4" attack line to the basement for a quick knock- down. Singerly was on the call as engine mutual aid and E9-1, E8-2, and E7-4 also responded. Chief 9-8 (Kavanagh) had command and all units cleared by 1330hrs.

11/1/03 22:20 MVC + Entrapment @ 1 Stoddard Dr

A busy night for Aetna had units responding to several MVCs, one of which involved a single vehicle striking a tree and entraping the driver. Assistant Chief 8-8B (Hendricks) was first onscene and confirmed entrapment. E9-1 and A7 arrived o/s to begin patient care and extrication of the driver via the passenger-side door. Extrication was completely within minutes and the patient was taken as a trauma alert to CER via A8.

10/22/03 01:07 2-Alarm House Fire 287 Hollingsworth Manor

In the early morning on Wednesday, Aetna was alerted to assist Elkton, MD on a working house fire. Soon after, the 2nd alarm was struck bringing L9, E8-4, and E7-4 to the scene. E7-4 went to the roof of the 3rd unit that was involved and opened up. All units cleared within an hour.

10/21/03 01:52 Fatal MVC + Ejection I95NB near Salem Church Rd

Just before 0200hrs, Aetna was alerted to an MVC on Interstate 95. While the intial units of Rescue 8 and A9 were responding, they were advised of possible subjects in the roadway bringing Medic 3 and Trooper 4 on the response. Units arrived to find a single vehicle which had crossed the median and struck a guardrail. Two occupants were ejected, one of which was pronounced on-scene. Both the driver and other ejected occupant were transported to CER. Deputy 8 had command and all units cleared within 2 hours.

10/16/03 10:55 MVC + Pin Academy St @ E. Park Pl

At 1055hrs, Aetna was alerted to an MVC with entrapment down the street from Station 9. Ambulance B9 and Engine 91 made the response and arrived within minutes of dispatch. Upon arrival, units found one occupant trapped and used the paladin tool to remove the passenger door.


9/29/03 06:34 MVC + Pin I95 @ South College Av

Shortly after morning crews came on-duty and just over 9 hours from the previous pin, Aetna was alerted to an MVC with entrapment at Interstate 95 by South College Av. B9 made the response along with E7-4 and Rescue 8. Units found a Jeep off the roadway with the driver entraped. A door removal was necessary to free the driver who was transported to CER. Assistant Chief 98B (Debold) had command and all units cleared shortly after.


9/28/03 21:15 Fatal MVC + Entrapment Paper Mill @ Fox Den

At 2115hrs, Aetna was alerted to an MVC with entrapment at Paper Mill Rd and Fox Den Rd. E9-1 made the response and arrived first to find two vehicles with both driver's entraped. While B9 was responding, E9-1 began extrication of one patient who was freed 8 minutes later, while the other half of the crew began care to the second patient who was grossly entrapped while R8 began extrication. The first patient was transported to CER in stable condition, but the second patient succombed to the injuries sustained onscene. Deputy 9 (Meredith) had command and Deputy 8 (Kreer) oversaw the extrication.


9/26/03 03:01 Fatal MVC + Ejection on Frenchtown Rd

Early morning, Aetna was dispatched to an MVC with ejection along Frenchtown Rd. Units arrived to find a car versus tree with one patient ejected and DOA. Units cleared around 0500hrs.


9/23/03 08:22 MVC + Pin I95 NB @ Toll Plaza

At 0822hrs, Aetna was alerted to a MVC with entrapment south of the toll plaza on I95. Assistant Chief 98B (Debold) arrived to find a vehicle off the roadway with the driver entrapped. E9-1 arrived with B9 and worked on opening the driver's door. Rescue 8 assisted the crews onscene and the driver was transported to CER.


9/22/03 08:07 Working Townhouse Fire 171 Madison Dr

At 0807 hrs, Aetna was alerted to a townhouse fire with a report of an air conditioner on fire. E9-3 arrived as fire blew out the front windows and advanced a 1-3/4" attack line to the first floor to find several rooms off which were quickly knocked down. Ladder 9 took the front, S7 backed up E9-3, and E8-2 covered the rear. Quint 21-7 checked the neighboring units for extention, but none was found. Assistant Chief 98B (Debold) had command and units cleared by 0955hrs.


Hurricane Isabel calls and Aetna answers with over 135 runs!

Along with other companies along the Eastern seaboard, Aetna was innundated with an abnormally large call volume during a 48 hr period. During the bulk of the storm, Aetna staffed 6 crews of five members. Station 9 became a dispatch headquarters with a direct tie to Fireboard and dispatched its own alarms for most of the storm.


9/19/03 18:43 Working Building Fire 172 Danford Drive

Just as units were responding to a reported garage fire, Aetna was alerted to assist Singerly (Cecil, MD) on a working building fire. E8-2 and E7-4 diverted to the call with Ladder 9 making the response shortly after. Units assisted onscene by opening up the roof and ventilating the structure. Aetna units cleared by 1958hrs.


9/1/03 02:18 Working House Fire 65 Wedgewood Rd

Within 8 hours of the previous fire, Aetna was again alerted to a working house fire at 65 Wedgewood Rd with Singerly as an engine company assist. Squrt 7 arrived to find a fully involved attached garage with fire extending into the house. E8-2 arrived immediately behind and advanced a 1-3/4" handline to the interior and cut off the spread of fire along the 'D' wall. E9-3 arrived and provided E8-2 and Squrt 7 with its water supply as this was a non-hydrant area. Both Westgrove and Singerly supplied tankers to the scene. Assistant Chief 9-8C had command and all units cleared by 05:30.


8/30/03 18:40 Working House Fire 10 Bastille Loop

After a day with two fires extinguished prior to arrival, E9-1 was investigating a tree on fire and was dispatched to a house fire down the road with Christiana as an engine company assist. E9-1 arrived to find fire issuing from the attic and advanced an 1-3/4" handline to the 2nd floor. Singerly was assigned the RIT duties. Chief 98 (Kavanagh) had command and Assistant Chief 7-8B had operations. Units cleared by 2200.


8/20/03 17:35 Working House Fire 102 Loretta Ln

A hour and a half after clearing Admirals Club, Aetna was dispatched on the WFD for a fire in Christiana. Arriving units found heavy fire issuing from the back of a house. E9-1 made the response and was assigned RIT duties which was then released to perform roof venting and extinguishment. A propane tank on the back porch leaked into the house, igniting and then BLEVE'd causing severe property loss.


8/20/03 15:14 Building Fire 16 Fairway Rd Apt 2C

A little later in the afternoon than the fire the day before, Aetna was dispatched for the building fire at Admirals Club Apartments with Mill Creek for an engine and ladder. B9 was first in reporting smoke showing and found a kitchen off and extending into the hall. As E93 established their water supply and advanced an 1-3/4" handline, B9 discharged their extinguisher keeping the fire contained. E93 extinguished the remaining fire while remaining searches were completed. Assistant Chief 9-8B had command and all units cleared by 16:09.


8/19/03 13:34 Working House Fire 149 E. Rutherford Dr

Early afternoon, Aetna was dispatched as an engine and rescue company on a working house fire. Units responding could see a column in the sky and arrived with heavy fire from the second floor. An occupant was laying outside the structure with severe burn to which they later died from. E9-1 was assigned as RIT and Rescue 8 complemented them as well as assisted with overhaul.


8/12/03 07:30 MVC w/pin Christina Parkway West of Elkton Rd

During the morning hours of Tuesday, Aetna was alerted to an MVC with entrapment on the bridge of Christina Parkway. E9-1 and A7 made the intial response arriving to find a single passenger vehicle which had been struck by a utility trailer that had released from its truck. The female driver was pinned by the dash and door and E9-1 began removing the roof with the paladin tool and Sawzall. Rescue 8, Rescue 12, and assists from Elkton were utilized during the extrication which required door removal and dash-roll. A7 and Medic 6 transported the driver to CER. Assistant Chief 9-8C (Bowerson) had command.


8/9/03 21:54 Fatal MVC Old Baltimore Pk @ Old Cooches Bridge Rd

Saturday night, Aetna was alerted to an MVC at the intersection of Old Baltimore Pike and Old Cooches Bridge Rd. This area is known for its narrow twisty roads and an old sturdy bridge with two Civil War cannons nearby. First arriving unit A8 found a single vehicle crash which had struck one of the cannons and thrown a back seat occupant out the back window. The driver, 18, and her boyfriend front-seat passenger, 20, suffered minor injuries. One backseat passenger was DOA with the second, believed to be brothers, was found under him in critical condition. Extrications were performed for better access to the victims by B3. Rescue 8, E7-4, and A7 also made the response and Assistant Chief 8-8B (Hendricks) had command.


7/25/03 20:22 Fatal MVC @ Old County Rd and Lyric Rd

Mid-Friday evening, Aetna was alerted to an MVC involving a motorcycle in the area of Lyric Rd on Old County Rd. Assistant Chief 8-8B (Hendricks) arrived on the scene with Medic 6 to find a severely injured motorcyclist. Medic 6 pronounced the single rider due to injuries recieved from striking a guidewire and then a pole while rounding a curve. Units secured the scene while the State performed their accident investigation.


7/21/03 20:33 MVC w/entrapment @ Otts Chapel Rd and Elkton Rd

Aetna was alerted to an MVC with an unconscious person at the intersection of Otts Chapel Rd and Elkton Rd. Initial reports indicated a person trapped and first arriving units found the same. Engine 7-4, utilizing the paladin tool, began removing the driver's door which had been severely impacted from a t-bone collision. A8 and B9 began stabilizing the patient and Rescue 8 arrived shortly after to assist in the removal of the roof. Deputy 9 had command and all units cleared by 21:15.


7/8/03 12:55 House Fire @ 1285 Casho Mill Rd

During a very hot Tuesday mid-day, Aetna was alerted to a house fire. E9-3 was on the street for another alarm in district and re-directed to the fire. Units responding could see the column of smoke in the sky and arrived to find several third floor rooms involved with fire extending into the cockloft. E9-3 laid 1275' of 5" into the scene just barely making the pump intake with it. The crew advanced a 1-3/4" handline to the fire for an aggressive knockdown while E9-1 advanced a second line and vented the structure from the interior. Due to the day's high temperature, mutual aid was relied upon heavily. Assistant Chief 78C (Daniels) had command and units cleared by 1515 hours.


6/30/03 00:19 Train Fire @ 430 Bow Street

Within 6 hrs of the previous fire, Aetna was alerted to assist Singerly with an Amtrak train on fire. Units arrived with E9-1 to find the main locomotive ablaze. Due to electrical lines still live and passengers still aboard the train, units set up defensive operations to protect the passenger compartments until power could be cut. Special calls were placed to Aberdeen Proving Grounds for their foam truck to respond for complete extinguishment. Units cleared by 0230hrs.


6/29/03 18:45 Building Fire @ 24 Brookedge Court

Aetna was alerted to assist Christiana (3,6,12) on a building fire. Initial units arriving reported smoke showing from a three-story apartment building. E9-1 and Rescue 8 responded from Aetna with E9-1 arriving to complete a back-lay for E12-5 and then took a second hydrant into E3-7. Rescue 8 was assigned the RIT enroute. Fire was located in a bedroom of the apartment by E9-1 and E12-5 and E9-1 advanced the line for extinguishment.


6/27/03 01:20 Building Fire @ 608 Melrose Place

Aetna was alerted to a building fire with a report of smoke in the apartment. E82 made the initial response and arrived to find smoke showing. While the operator hand stretched to a nearby hydrant, the crew advanced an 1-3/4" handline to a vacant apartment where a quick knockdown of the fire was done. E9-3 and members of E8-2 searched floors above while E21-7 searched the first floor. Deputy 8 (Kreer) had command and all units cleared by 0300 hrs


6/13/03 22:02 Hazmat Building Fire @ 650 Dawson Drive

While units were getting a handle on the house fire, Aetna was alerted to a building fire with Christiana responding as mutual aid. E8-2 made the initial response and arrived to meet Rescue 3 on scene. Units found an unknown chemical spill inside the building which had been ignited from an unknown source. All units withdrew immediately and a Hazmat response was requested. Units were able to identify the substance and obtain MSDS information to aid in eventually extinguishing the fire. Assistant Chief 98B (Debold) had command and all units cleared by 00:20.


6/13/03 21:25 House Fire @ 111 Ascot Ct

Friday the 13th began with multiple alarms in the district. While E9-3 and Ladder 9 were returning from a box-alarm in Four Seasons, and E9-1 and E7-4 were returning from a small fire in Admirals club, Aetna was dispatched for a house struck by lighting. As initial units responded, stormy weather severely impeeded response and caused delay. E9-3 arrived to find smoke issuing from the roofline of a 2-story SFD with residents stating fire was in the chimney. Ladder 9 arrived right behind with an engine from Singerly and units immediately went to work trying to locate the fire. After finding no fire in the attic, units found fire in the basement which had already burned through the first floor. Multiple units went to work from Middletown, Christiana, Odessa, Singerly, and Aetna. Assistant Chief 98C (Bowerson) had command with assistance from Chief 98 and Deputy 9. All units cleared by 00:35 hrs.


6/7/03 08:06 MVC w/Entrapment into House @ 2943 Frenchtown Rd

On Saturday morning, Aetna was alerted toa MVC into a house with entrapment. E9-1, A9 and A8 responded along with Rescue 8. Units arrived to find one patient entraped within the vehicle which had struck a residence. Crews worked to stabilize the scene and free the entraped driver for aproximately 15 minutes. Medic 6 responded on the call, but Trooper 4 flew the patient to CER as a Trauma Alert. Assistant Chief 7-8B (Palermo) had command.


6/5/03 06:35 Fatal MVC Pleasant Valley @ Pencader Dr

Soon after morning crews began their shifts, Aetna was alerted to an MVC with possible entrapment along Pleasant Valley Rd. Initial units A9 and A8 arrived to find several injuries in a multi-vehicle collision. No patient was entraped, however the driver of one vehicle was pronounced dead on-scene.


6/4/03 11:35 House Fire @ 2111 Othoson Ave

Aetna was alerted to a house fire to assist Mill Creek (2,21) shortly before noon on Wednesday. Initial units responding reported smoke throughout the residence but had difficulty locating the source of the fire. E9-1 responded on the alarm and E8-4 responded on a request for additional manpower. Fire was located in the basement and within the walls and ceiling of the first floor.


5/29/03 03:02 House Fire @ 36 Kollman Drive

Aetna units were alerted to a working house fire in the early morning hours on Thursday. Christiana responsed as and engine company and Mill Creek responded as R.I.T. Deputy 8 (Kreer) reported smoke showing having E9-3 establish a water supply. The five members of E9-3 advanced an 1-3/4" attack line through the residence while the operator threw ground ladders. A fire was extinguished in the rear of the residence and the attic. E9-1 vented the roof and additional units performed overhaul operations. Additional units reponding: E8-2, R3, E12-4, E2-6, E21-7. Chief 9-8 (Kavanagh) had command and no injuries were reported.


5/27/03 01:20 Building Fire @ Dollar Land, Big Elk Mall

In the early morning, Aetna was dispatched to assist Singerly on a working building fire in Cecil, MD. Earlier in the evening, Cecil units had extinguished a fire in this same location and now arrived with fire in the attic. E9-1 made the response from Newark and assisted Singerly units with extinguishment and overhaul. E9-1 was back by 03:15 hours.


Two months yield many working alarms

Since the last update two months ago, Aetna has served the Greater Newark community with several noteworthy incidents. Rescue operations on the roadways consisted of at least three entrapments, one of which was a fatal collision on I95 at the tollplaza. Aetna firefighters also battled three single alarm structure fires during that time-frame. The first was a one-story house fire in Brookside in the late morning. Another was a large detached garage fire with exposure in the rear of another Brookside house. The most recent fire was in a commercial heating and air conditioning structure. All fires were under control within a half hour with no injuries and all were under command of Assistant Chief 9-8C (Bowerson).


3/19/03 21:00 MVC w/rollover & entrapment E. Delaware @ Haines

Just as Aetna was completing their weekly fire school training session at Station 9 (coincidentally, topic was Vehicle Rescue), stations were alerted to an MVC with rollover and entrapment just around the corner a block away. Rescue 8 and E7-4 arrived to find a two vehicle collision with one patient entraped on a rolled over SUV. Units worked to stabilize the vehicle while access was gained to the unconscious patient via the windshield. Assistant Chief 88C (Campbell) had the extrication with Chief 98 (Kavanagh) in command.


3/3/03 17:47 House Fire 30 Lynn Drive

Aetna was alerted to a house fire with report of fire in an attic with Singerly Fire Company as engine company mutual aid. While initial units were responding, reports of smoke showing by a police officer were recieved. E9-1 arrived on-scene first with E9-3 laying a 5" line. A 1-3/4" line was advanced and a smoldering fire was found in the attic near a chimney. E8-2, Rescue 8 and E7-4 also made the response. Units operated on-scene until 19:22 hrs with Assistant Chief 78B (Palermo) in command.


3/2/03 03:29 hrs Building Fire 537 Booth Street

Six hours after clearing the previous fire, Aetna was again dispatched to assist Singerly Fire Company as a ladder and engine company on a working building fire. E9-3, E9-1, and Ladder 9 responded to arrive with units on-scene to perform searches of several apartments as well as assist with overhaul and checking for extention. All units cleared by 0430 hours.


3/1/03 19:41 Building Fire 314 Hollingsworth Manor

Aetna was dispatched to assist Singerly Fire Company as a ladder and engine company on a working building fire. E7-3 and Ladder 9 responded and arrived to assist units on-scene who had performed a quick knockdown of a room and contents fire. Units cleared by 21:13 hours.


Snowstorm drops 23" in Newark

During the storm that affect most of the north-eastern seaboard, Aetna maintained multiple EMS, fire, and rescue crews through the two-day ordeal. Responding to 43 alarms during the storm, Aetna's resources were tested with many members working over 24 hrs straight.


2/13/03 10:04 MVC w/Entrapment Denny Rd @ Summit Bridge Rd

At 10:04 hrs Aetna was alerted to an MVC involving a construction drilling machine. E9-1, B9 and A8 made the response and arrived to find the driver entrapped. E9-1 utilized the paladin tool to extricate the patient who was transported by Trooper 4 to CER. Assistant Chief 9-8C (Bowerson) had command and units cleared by 11:04 hrs.


2/5/03 14:00 Construction Rescue @ 598 Capitol Trail

Aetna was alerted at 2pm for a rescue involving two workers who had fallen from a bridge due to a scaffolding collapse. Rescue 8 and Ladder 9 responded with B9 to find 2 workers beneath the bridge. Crews operated to remove the workers using stokes baskets, ropes, and ladders safely to upper ground where they were transported to CER. 1/26/03 14:14 Building Fire @ 1011 Melrose Place

At 14:14 hours, Aetna was alerted to a building fire with smoke coming from an apartment on the third floor. A8 arrived with smoke showing with E9-1 laying out with 5". Advancing a 1-3/4" line, E9-1 met Quint 21-7 on the fire floor and made entry into the apartment to extinguish a kitchen fire extention into the hall and living room. Searches by 21-7 were negative and units cleared by 16:00 hrs. Chief 9-8 (Kavanagh) had command.


1/21/03 17:09 Building Fire @ 254 West Main St

At 17:09 hrs, Aetna was dispatched to Newark Manor nursing home with Singerly and Christina fire departments as engine and ladder mutual aid. Receiving reports of a fire on the third floor, A8 arrived on scene first and assisted with removal of residents from the third floor. E7-4 arrived soon after advancing an 1-3/4" from the standpipe to extinguish remaining fire being contained by an activated sprinkler in the laundry room. E8-2 assisted with fire suppression and remaining units began evacuation of residents from the home. A total of 44 residents were evacuating with units responding from Hockessin, Middletown, and Mill Creek. Heavy water damage was recieved to three floors. Deputy 8 (Kreer) had command, 9 Captain 2 (Johnson) had EMS command, 7-8B (Palermo) had the interior. All units cleared by 21:47hrs.

1/21/03 05:52 Working House Fire @ 130 Midland Drive

Just before 6am, Aetna was alerted to assist Singerly as a rescue company on a working house fire. E8-4, Rescue 8, and A7 responded and arrived to assist with suppression and overhaul efforts. A7 treated and transported one resident for smoke inhalation. Units cleared by 0900 hrs.


1/20/03 01:22 Townhouse Fire @ 169 Madison Drive

An early morning alarm for smoke coming from the rear of a townhouse had Aetna go to work on a basement fire with Singerly as mutual aid. E9-1 arrived first with smoke showing and began advancing an 1-3/4" to the front door with E8-2. E7-4 arrived to the rear with a 5" supply and forced entry into the basement to extinguish the fire with an 1-3/4" pre-connect. Additional units responding assisted with overhaul and checking for extension. 9-8C (Bowerson) had command, 8-8C (Campbell) had the rear, all units cleared by 0300 hrs.


1/18/03 06:30 Rail Car Fire Appleton Rd @ Elk Mills Rd

Aetna was alerted to a fire on a moving train with Singerly as mutual aid. E7-0 and E9-1 arrived to find a box car with fire from heavy loads of paper buring inside. After the train came to a full stop in Singerly's district, crews knocked down the car with 1-3/4" lines. Units cleared soon after sending a smoldering train on its way.


1/15/03 09:05 MVC w/entrapment Fox Den Rd @ Bridge

An mid-morning entrapment turned into a 35 minute delicate extrication for Aetna. A19 arrived a minute before A8 and B9 to find a single mini-van off the roadway into woods with a driver entrapment. Due to the vehicle landing between two trees and significant damage throughout, both E9-1 and R8 operated for over a half-hour removing the roof, doors, and dash. One patient was transport via Trooper 4 to CER in critical condition. Deputy 9 (Meredith) had command and all units cleared by 10:54 hrs.
