12/17/02 19:23 Working House Fire @ 15 Annes Way

At 19:23 hrs, Aetna was alerted to an assist with Chester County's Westgrove FD (22) on a house fire. E7-4 made the initial response, and soon after E8-2 was requested on the alarm as well. E7-4 arrived second behind E22, which had begun an interior attack on a 2-story private dwelling with fire showing from a second floor bedroom. E7-4 provided ladders to the second floor and assisted in ventilation and overhaul. Chief 22 had command and E7-4 cleared by 21:12 hrs.


12/8/02 13:44 2-Alarm Building Fire @ 710 W. Pulaski Hwy

Aetna was dispatched at 13:44 hours to assist the Singerly FD on a working building fire. E8-4 responded and assisted in water supply and interior attack operations. The fire, which almost fully consumed an auto-body shop, went to 2 alarms and caused near $600,000 in damage after destroying 6 vehicles among shop equipment. The fire is believed to have started after a worker started a chain-saw near gasoline that was being drained from a vehicle. E8-4 cleared by 15:18 hrs.


12/7/02 17:46 Working House Fire @ 35 Quartz Mill Rd

An hour after returning from the building fire, Aetna was alerted to assist Hockessin (19) on a reported garage fire. E8-4 made the response and arrived just behind Tanker 19 to find heavy fire that had consumed a single-story garage attached to a two-story dwelling and was venting through the attic of the garage. E8-4 advanced an 1-3/4" line with members of Tanker 19 through the house to protect extension of fire from the garage. While the garage was knocked down from the outside, E8-4 was able to open the ceiling and knock down the bulk of the fire in the attic. Chief 19-8 had command and no injuries were reported. E30-5 (Belvedere) also made the response from Station 8 as they were covering us during our annual Christmas Banquet. Our appreciation and thanks is extended to those crew members!


12/7/02 13:59 Building Fire @ 325 Newark Shopping Center

At 13:59 hours, Aetna was dispatched to a report of a smoke oder at the Royal Buffet along with Christiana (3,6,12) as mutual aid. E9-3 arrived first with nothing evident except a slight haze of smoke throughout the establishment. Upon the crew's investigation, fire was found in the ceiling above the the drop-tiles. A quick overhaul of the tiles and insulation allowed an 1-3/4" line to knock down the bulk of the fire as E8-2 laid a 5" supply and E12-5 covered the rear. Ladder 9 set-up to the roof and checked for extension. The steel roofing and brick walls above the drop ceiling helped hide this fire for several hours as the ceiling joists burned. Assistant Chief 9-8B (Eichinger) had command. Poor wiring for the restaurante's signs is suspected to be the cause.


12/6/02 22:17 MVC w/entrapment Capitol Trail @ Possum Park

At 22:17 hours, Aetna was dispatched to a MVC along Capitol Trail at Possum Park Road. A7 arrived on-scene first and advised the driver of one of two vehicles involved was trapped. E9-3, only a minute behind, arrived to quickly remove the door with their paladin tool. A7 transported the driver to CER where he was treated and released.


11/30/02 11:42 Working House Fire @ 308 Stamford Drive

Crews were just dressing down from a call when Aetna was alerted to a house fire with Singerly (3,13,14) as mutual aid. E9-3, along with B9, rolled first spotting a header 1.5 miles out and requested a working fire dispatch. E8-4, E7-4, and R8 responded soon after along with Q3-7, E12-5, and B3 from Christiana (3,6,12). Arriving on-scene, E9-3 laid a 5" supply and found heavy fire showing from both floors and the roof line. Assistant Chief 9-8B (Eichinger) assumed IC and directed R8 to vent the roof while E9-3 advanced two 1-3/4" handlines for an agressive interior attack. Soon after making the second floor, a bedroom ceiling and rafters collapsed on two members of E9-3 and Deputy 7 (Welch). Soon after, heavy fire vented through the roof and all interior operations ceased until an exterior knock-down of the attic was completed. One member of E9-3 suffered injuries from a large peice of ceiling falling onto him and had to be transported to CER. Assistant Chief 9-8B (Eichinger) had command, Deputy 9 (Meredith) had operations, Deputies 7 & 8 (Welch & Kreer) had the interior, and Assistant Chief 9-8B (Debold) had the rear. All units cleared by 14:48hrs.


11/19/02 22:12 MVC w/ Ejection & Pin @ Paper Mill Rd/Fox Den Rd

A full moon brought a busy night for Aetna starting at 2012hrs. Aetna was dispatched to a MVC w/ejection, rollover, and entrapment along Paper Mill Rd at Fox Den Rd. Deputy 7 (Welch) arrived to find a BMW convertible rolled over on an embankment with one occupant trapped inside and one occupant DOA 60 yards futher up the road. E93, R8, and A7 made the response, but operations were delayed due to a snapped utility pole hanging above the vehicle. After further evaluation, crews were ordered to perform the extrication with minimal personnel near the vehicle. Utilizing a paladin tool, crews removed one door and extricated the patient rapidly. He was last noted to be in stable condition at CER. The ejected female (driver) was apparantly struck by another vehicle after she crawled into lanes of traffic. Deputy 7 had command, Deputy 8 (Kreer) had operations, and all units cleared by 2313 to respond to several more incidents over the course of the night including a rolled over vehicle into a pond.


11/11/02 02:25 House Fire @ 75 Red Hill Rd

Early morning on Monday, Aetna was dispatched for an engine and rescue company assist to Elkton, MD (3,13,14) for a working house fire. Rescue 8 and E7-2 made the response arriving to find a structure fully involved. Rescue 8 and E7-2 worked to protect exposures and knock-down the fire with defensive procedures. The fire is suspected to be arson related. Units cleared at 0555hrs.


10/31/02 18:12 MVC w/pin @ 2719 Pulaski Hwy

Aetna was dispatched to a 2 vehicle MVC with entrapment Halloween evening. Rescue 8, E93, and E74 responded arriving to find the driver trapped and priority 1. Trooper 4 staged nearby while crews removed the driver's door, roof, and rolled the dash. Extrication was completed in approximately 15 minutes with Trooper 4 transporting the only patient to CER. Deputy 8 (Kreer) had command and units cleared by 1930 hrs.


10/27/02 23:31 Building Fire @ 2496 Pulaski Hwy

An apparant arsonist caused Aetna to respond to a working building fire Sunday night. Singerly (Elkton, MD) and Christiana (3,6,12) were sent as engine and truck mutual aid. First units found a restaurant with smoke showing from all sides and roof. E8-2 initiated an interior attack with 1-3/4" handlines making quick work of a smoldering fire that apparantly had "burned itself out". Roof operations were initated by E3-7 and engines 7-4, 7-2, 6-5, and R-8 performed interior assignments. Heavy damage was sustained to all rooms of the building from the length of time the fire went unchecked. Chief 98 (Kavanagh) had command and all units cleared by 0215hrs.


10/26/02 07:06 Fatal MVC w/ Entrapment on I95

Aetna units responded to a single vehicle MVC with entrapment on I95 early Saturday morning. B9 was first to arrive finding the car wrapped around a tree with the driver DOA and passenger entraped. E9-1, E7-4, Rescue 8 made the response completing the extrication in a little under 15 minutes. Chief 98 (Kavanagh) had command and Assistant Chief 98C (Bowerson) had the extrication.


10/22/02 11:49 Basement Fire @ 258 Delaplane Av

Just before lunch, Aetna was alerted to a house fire with Mill Creek (2,21) as mutual aid. Deputy 7 (Welch) arrived soon after to find smoke showing from an apparant basement fire. Squirt 21 pulled a 1-3/4" line while E8-2 laid a 5" supply line. E8-2 advanced to the basement with S21 assisting to make quick work of the fire. E9-3 provided a back-up line with E2-7 searching the floors above. No injuries were reported and all units cleared by 1419 hrs.


10/7/02 Fallen Firefighter Bell Ringing

The old brass bell at Station 9 on Academy Street rang a mournful 446 times this past Sunday in rememberance of all those who died in the Line of Duty the past year. The bell has been in Newark since the early 1900s when it was used to alert firefighters to emergencies. The resonant sound can be heard for miles.

10/4/02 00:06 MVC w/Entrpmnt on Pencader Dr

Just past midnight, Aetna was dispatched to an MVC with entrapment on Pencader Drive just off of Rt 896. E9-1 and Rescue 8 made the response and arrived to find a car that had rear-ended a tractor-trailer at a high rate of speed. The driver was pinned under the dash which had to be rolled after roof and door removals. The driver was transported by LifeNet (medi-vac) and Medic 3 as a trauma code (Priority 1). 8-8C (Hendricks) had command.


9/30/02 14:48 MVC w/Entrpmnt @ Library/Wyoming

Just after being alerted to a collision involving two school buses, Aetna was dispatched to a vehicle collision with reported entrapment. E9-1 while enroute to the bus collision, arrived within minutes to perform a quick stabilization and door pop. A7 transported the driver to CER. 9-8C (Bowerson) had command.


9/26/02 13:02 Tractor-Trailer vs Tour Bus @ I95

Just after 1pm, Aetna was alerted to a motor vehicle accident involving a bus on I-95. A8 arrived to find a jack-knifed tractor leaking fuel and an occupied tour bus off the road. A total of 9 BLS, 4 ALS, 3 Rescues, and 2 engines were utilized for extrication and transport of 22 patients. Crews worked for over an hour cutting the interior of the bus to extricated several patients. I95 was closed for 90 minutes and then only opening 2 lanes until early evening. Deputy 7 (Welch) had command, 98C (Bowerson) had operations, and all units cleared by 15:15.

9/24/02 00:27 House Fire @ 103 Witherspoon Ln

At 0027 hours, Aetna was alerted to a house fire reported as the roof with Christiana (3,6,12) as ladder and engine mutual aid. Assistant Chief 98C (Bowerson) arrived to find a row of single story attached occupied dwellings with smoke showing from units 101-107 along the roof. E8-2 laid in with 5" and advanced an 1-3/4" line while E9-3 did the same advancing to the rear. S7 began ventilation of the roof while crews operated inside trying to find the fire. A small fire was found in the walls of 103 and 105 and quickly extinguished. 98C had command, Deputy 8 had the interior, and no injuries were reported.


9/3/02 04:40 Building Fire @ 2677 Capitol Trail

At 0440 hours, Aetna was dispatched to assist Mill Creek (2,21) on a working building fire. Chief 21-8 arrived on-scene with heavy fire showing from the rear of a one-story commercial. First-in units laid 5" supply lines and initiated an interior attack. Ladder 9 arrived as the second truck, laddering the structure and proceeding to the roof to assist 2,21 units with ventilation. Ladder 9 cleared at 0610 hrs. Heavy damage was sustained to the restaraunte. 21-8 had command and 21-8B had the interior. No injuries were reported.


8/14/02 05:15 3-Alarm Building Fire @ 511 Edison

Just before 0500, Christiana (3,6,12) was dispatched for a building fire at the Lexington Green apartments. First in units found fire coming through the roof of a garden-style apartment building and residents jumping from their windows. A8 responded on the initial alarm and a second alarm brought E9-1. A third alarm brought both E8-4 and Ladder 9. A collapse of a stairway in the rear hampered efforts as crews pressed an aggressive interior attack on a fully involved 3rd floor. Fire spread was halted at the 2nd floor and no extention into either the B or D attached exposures. Several residents were treated for injuries from jumping or smoke inhalation. One firefighter suffered heat exaustion. Deputy 12 (DuHaduway, III "Bub") had command and all units cleared by 0830. [The News Journal] [2]


7/30/02 02:16 House Fire @ 5 Westerly Street

At 0216 hrs, Aetna was alerted to a house fire with Christiana (3,6,12) as engine and ladder mutual aid. E9-3 arrived on-scene with Assistant Chief 98C (Bowerson) finding smoke showing from the rear of the residence. Further investigation found a large exterior portion of the house to be on fire. An 1-3/4" hand line was utilized and the fire was knocked down in minutes. Very little fire extended into the residence. Chief 98 (Kavanagh) had command and no injuries were reported. Arson is believed to be the cause of the fire, possibly due to a Molotov cocktail.


7/28/02 23:49 4-Alarm Building Fire @ Marina Plaza

Just before midnight, Aetna was alerted to an engine and ladder company assist for a working building fire in Elkton, MD. Ladder 9 and E8-4 made the initial response on the first alarm arriving to begin ventilation along a strip shopping center. As multiple alarms were struck, E8-2 also assisted on the scene. Crews worked for several hours extinguishing a stubborn fire in the roof that was fueled by a broken gas line. Several firefighters from other companies suffered from heat exhaustion during the incident.





7/23/02 19:48 House Fire @ 5 Argyle Rd

About an hour after clearing Chrysler Corp., Aetna was dispatched to a reported attached garage fire with Christiana (3,6,12) sent as engine mutual aid. Assistant Chief 98C (Bowerson) arrived to confirm fire showing from the rear of the garage while initial units were responding. Utilizing a "green line" garden hose, 98C knocked down much of the fire until E82 arrived and completed the attack. The scene was under control by 19:58 with units clearing 20 minutes later. Deputy 8 (Kreer) had command, 88B (Witzke) had operations, and 98C had the interior. The fire is believed to be arson.


7/23/02 18:01 Industrial Explosion @ Chrysler Corp.

At 18:01 hours, Aetna was dispatched to a reported explosion at the Chrysler Manufacturing plant off of South College Avenue (Rt. 896). Christiana (3,6,12) was sent as engine and ladder mutual aid as was Mill Creek (2,21). First units arrived to find two severely burned workers from high voltage electricity. E93 and E82 assisted A7 and B9 with EMS prior to Medic 6 and 7 arriving. One patient was transported to Chester Crozier burn center and one was transported to CER, both in serious condition. Due to electrical nature of the explosion, very little suppression effort was needed and all units cleared by 1855hrs.


7/18/02 08:39 MVC w/Entrapment @Christina Pkwy

At 0839 hours, Aetna was dispatched to an MVC with entrapment at the 400 block of Christina Parkway. Assistant Chief 78B (Debold) arrived to find three subjects trapped in two vehicles from a head-on collision. Trooper 4 and LifeNet (MediVacs) and an additional rescue were requested to the scene. E9-1 began extrication while A8, B9, Medic 3, Medic 7, and Command 7 treated the patients. With the arrival of Rescue 8 and Elkton's Rescue 371, E9-1 was able to finish the extrication with door, roof removals, and a dash displacement. All patients are being treated at CER. All units cleared by 0957 hours.


Funeral Cover-up at Bellmawr Co. 33, Gloucester, NJ

On July 10th, several units from the tri-state area including E7-4 from Aetna, traveled to Gloucester City, NJ to cover up several stations during the funeral of Thomas G. Stewart, III. FF Stewart, two other firefighters and three children were killed after a collapse during a house fire. The Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder Co. sends their deepest sympathies to all those affected, especially the friends and family of those who perished.


7/2/02 17:07 Building Fire 236 Elkton Rd

Shortly after 5pm, 9 Captain 2 (Johnson) noticed fire showing from the rear of building E at the West Knoll apartment complex. Aetna and Singerly (Elkton, MD) were alerted and while units were responding, 9C2 completed evacuation and search of the building. E7-4 advanced a 1-3/4" hand line to the ground floor while E8-2 laid a supply line and advanced a 1-3/4" line to the rear. The bulk of the fire was quickly knocked down with extention to the 2nd floor. Assistant Chief 98C (Bowerson) had command, Deputy 7 (Welch) had the rear, and 78C (Palermo) had the interior. Several firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion and released. The fire has been determined to be arson.


6/14/02 06:15 Fatal MVC w/Building Fire 2905 Pulaski Hwy

At 0615 hrs, Aetna was dispatched to an MVC at the intersection of Rt 40 and Pleasant Valley Rd. Responding crews A9, B9, and E9-3 soon received reports of an unconscious person with vehicle into a structure and on fire. Medic 6 and B9 were first to arrive, finding the driver of a single vehicle unconscious after being pulled from his burning truck by an off-duty police officer. A full box assignment dispatched due to heavy fire extension into Glasgow Auto Body bringing Christiana and Singerly. E9-3 advanced a 1-3/4" attack line for a quick knockdown while A9 forced entry and performed a quick search. Assistant Chief 9-8C (Bowerson) had command, Assistant Chief 7-8B (Debold) had the interior, and all units cleared by 0821. The driver died two days later at CER.


6/6/02 00:52 Fatal MVC w/Entrpmnt 1100 Ogletown Rd

After a month with an above average call volume and several minor extrications, Aetna was dispatched to the 1100 block of Ogletown Road just before 1 am for a MVC with entrapment. Initial reports stated a single vehicle had left the roadway striking a bulldozer and upon arrival of B9, the crew found the driver in critical condition with the passenger entrapped and in respiratory arrest. Rescue 8 responded from Station 8, only several hundred yards away, and assisted in a rapid extrication. Unfortunately, the passenger succumbed to his injuries with the driver in critical condition at Christiana Hospital. 9-8-C (Bowerson) had command.


5/6/02 13:12 House Fire Leeds Rd @ Simpers Rd

At 13:12 hours, Aetna was requested to cover-up Station 13 in Cecil County, MD. Soon after, E9-1 was called into the scene of a working one-story house fire. Upon arrival, E9-1 split into two crews for roof ventilation and extinguishment in the basement. Crews assisted with salvage and overhaul to the heavily damaged house and cleared shortly after 14:30 hours.


Chief Kavanagh Graces Fire Service Painting

Recently, Aetna Fire Chief Steve Kavangh was chosen along with several other firefighters from FDNY, DCFD, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania to be one of the faces in a recent painting by artist Chas Fagan. Chas Fagan has produced many other works for the government, most notably one that also appeared on the cover of Firehouse magazine in September of 1998. This current painting is expected to appear in Firehouse magazine as well as obtain a permanent place in the White House. Chief Kavanagh is on the far right of the painting.


5/4/02 01:35 Building Fire 59 East Main Street

Shortly after 1:30 am, Aetna was dispatched for a building fire at the Italian Bistro restaurant on Main St. Assistant Chief 7-8C (Palermo) arrived on scene with a light smoke condition in the closed restaurant. E12-4 was directed to force entry into the back kitchen where heavier smoke and an activated sprinker were found. Advancing and 1-3/4" handline, remaining fire was quickly knocked down while primary searches of the apartments above were conducted by Squrt 7. The fire is currently under investigation, but appears to be arson. Deputy 9 had command, Deputy 7 had operations, and no injuries were reported.


5/2/02 20:53 MVC w/ Entrapment 907 S. Chapel St

Aetna units responded to an MVC with reported entrapment a little before 9 p.m. Rescue 8 arrived onscene with one driver trapped and several others injured. While Rescue 8 was removing the driver's side door, E9-1 made patient contact and triaged several others. A9, B6, and A12 all transported to CER. Deputy 8 had command.


Newark Welcomes FDNY in Hockey Game

The FDNY Engine 45/Ladder 58 and Batallion 8 played the Wilmington Fire and Police department April 20th in a fundraising event at the Fred Rust Ice Arena on the University of Delaware campus. Multiple organizations were involved in a parade down Main Street, Newark as well as stops at a local fraternity house and restaurant. Aetna provided engine and ladder escorts for the caravan throughout the day.


4/18/02 15:21 MVC w/ Entrapment Rt. 2 @ Polly Drummond Hill

At 15:21 hours, Aetna was dispatched to a MVC with entrapment in the intersection of Capitol Trail and Polly Drummon Hill Road. E9-1 and Rescue 8 made the response along with A-9. While enroute, Deputy 7 arrived on-scene confirming one person trapped in the driver's seat. A-9 initiated patient care while crews from Rescue 8 and E9-1 worked to extricate the patient via paladin and 32B Hurst tools. The patient was extricated approximately 8 minutes after arrival of Rescue 8 and E9-1 and was in stable condition on transport to CER.


4/15/02 16:51 House Fire @ 2860 Ogletown Road

Just before 5:00 pm, Aetna was dispatched to a house fire with Christiana (3,6,12) as an engine company mutual aid. Ambulance B12 arrived onscene minutes later with smoke showing and E9-3 laid 500' of 5" before pulling and 1-3/4" handline. While E9-3 was advancing to the seat of the fire in the kitchen, Rescue 3 made a search of the second floor which came up negative. E9-3 quickly knocked down the fire which had extended into adjoining rooms. Deputy 8 (Kreer) had operations with Chief 9-8 (Kavanagh) taking command. All units cleared by 18:45.


4/15/02 11:37 House Fire @ 1024 Elkton Road

At 11:37 hours, Aetna was dispatched for a house fire with Singerly (Cecil, MD) as an engine company mutual aid. E9-3 arrived on scene with smoke showing and was advised by the homeowner of a fire in the heater room. An 1-3/4" handline was advanced for a quick knockdown and the residence was searched for remaining fire. Deputy 7 had command and all units cleared by 13:10 hours.


4/11/02 14:33 MVC w/ Entrapment Rt. 273 @ Red Mill Road

At 14:33 hours, Aetna was dispatched to a MVC with entrapment in the intersection of Rt. 273 and Red Mill Road. A8 arrived onscene with four patients, one of which was trapped in the middle seat of a mini-van. E9-1 worked with a paladin tool for approximately 10 minutes extricate the patient who was transported to CER as a trauma alert. 9 Captain 1 (Daniels) had command and all units cleared by 15:19 hours.


4/3/02 20:32 Fatal MVC w/ Entrapment E. Delaware @ S. Chapel

While training for vehicle rescue at a local junkyard, Aetna was dispatched to an MVC with entrapment. Chief 9-8 (Kavanagh) arrived on scene reporting one subject trapped while E9-1, E7-4, and Rescue 8 were responding. Units utilized multiple rescue tools for nearly 30 minutes to free a rear seated passenger from a car on its side and wrapped around a telephone pole. While working to free the victim, he stopped breathing and artificial ventilation had to be initiated. The driver was treated for minor cuts and bruises, the front passenger is paralyzed from the waist down, and the extricated patient succumbed to his injuries two days later. Police are currently investigating the accident, but have determined the driver was traveling well in excess of the 25 mph speed limit. Chief 9-8 had command, Assistant Chief 9-8C had the extrication, and all units cleared by 2200 hours. The News Journal article [1] [2] [3]


3/31/02 00:39 House Fire 39 Red Hill Road (Cecil, MD)

At 00:39 hours, Aetna was dispatched as a request for Rescue 8 on a working house fire in Cecil County, MD. Shortly thereafter, Aetna was re-dispatched for an engine company in addition to Resuce 8. E9-1, Squrt 7, and Rescue 8 all made the response arriving to find a one story single family dwelling fully involved with a Cecil engine performing an exterior attack with a deck gun. E9-1 drafted from a local pond after laying 1200' of 5" supply line to Squrt 7 which set up the boom but was not utilized. Rescue 8 attacked the fire with 1-3/4" handlines and assisted with overhaul. Units cleared by 0300 hours.


3/24/02 10:24 hrs House Fire @ 508 South Gerald Drive

At 10:24 Sunday morning, Aetna was dispatched as mutual aid to Christiana (3,6,12) for a house fire. A12 arrived onscene with smoke showing and initiated a primary search with negative results. E3-7, R12, and E9-1 arrived onscene within moments of each other to find a single story dwelling with the rear fully involved. E9-1 advanced an 1-3/4" attack line to the rear while a crew member began roof ventilation with R12. E3-7 advanced a handline through the front door but were delayed momentarily by water supply problems. E7-4 and E8-4 also responded with Christiana units. Chief Reeder (12-8) had command, Deputy 6 had operations, and all units cleared by 1400 hrs.


3/17/02 16:34 hrs MVC w/Entrapment Rt. 4 @ Marrows Road

Late Sunday afternoon, Aetna units were dispatched to an MVC with entrapment in the intersection of Rt. 4 and Marrows Road. Assistant Chief Bowerson (9-8C) arrived onscene confirming entrapment and requesting fire police. E8-2, returning from another alarm, arrived and began stabilization and traffic control until E9-1 arrived to begin extrication with their paladin tool. Rescue 8 arrived shortly after to finish a dash displacement and door removals required to extricate one patient who is recovering in Christiana Hospital. Chief Kavanagh (9-8) had command and all units cleared by 17:27 hrs.


New Ambulance "A-7" is Delivered!

In middle February, Aetna received a new Freightliner/Horton ambulance. Similar to B9, A7 sports dual air horns, a new suspension to improve the ride in the back, and an engine assisted braking system. In addition, many cosmetic and functional changes have been made, as well as better utilization of space. A7 will be running out of Station 9 for a few months for testing.


3/10/02 15:00 hrs House Fire @ 448 Muddy Lane (Cecil, MD)

At 15:00 hrs, Aetna was dispatched to a working house fire as an engine company assist in Cecil County, MD. Enine 9-1 and Squrt 7 made the response arriving on-scene just after the local's first in engine. Due to lack of hydrant coverage lays in excess of 1200' were performed. Upon arrival, much of the small house had collapsed. Crews focused efforts on saving a large shed and controlling exposure to oil and gas tanks. Due to the dry conditions, the fire extended into the woods and brush piece 7-0 was called in to assist. Units cleared by 18:30 hrs. No injuries were reported.


3/3/02 11:13 hrs House Fire w/Rescue @ Rt. 40/Delaware Av (Cecil, MD)

At 11:13 hrs, Aetna was dispatched as an engine company assist to Cecil County, MD for a working house fire. Squrt 7 and Engine 9-1 made the response and arrived after several local FD units. E9-1 and Squrt 7 began shuttle operations while manpower was sent to the scene. Crews were instructed to assume external operations due to the abandoned status of the house. Soon after, firefighters noticed motion in a third floor window and hastened to rescue a 57 year old man from the window with the room nearly fully invovled. After the rescue, crews resumed an external attack, eventually bringing Squrt 7 to the scene. The house recieved extensive damage as the fire progressed from the rear, into the attic, and dropping down floor by floor. Estimates of damage were not available as the owner planned to demolish the structure. One firefighter from Northeast, MD recieved 2nd degree burns to a finger and the rescued man recieved 2nd degree burns to 35% of his back and legs. Aetna units were released by 14:30 hrs.


2/24/02 22:14 hrs MVC w/ Fire @ Otts Chapel Road

At 22:14 hrs, Aetna was dispatched to a MVC with reported fire and subject not alert. A8 and E7-4 made the initial response with A7 and A9 following soon after. Assistant Chief 8-8C (Hendricks) arrived on-scene confirming an involved vehicle and multiple traumas. Trooper 4 (MediVac) transported one priority 1, and A7 and A8 each transported one to CER. E7-4 extinguished the car on fire. All units cleared by 0030hrs due to accident investigation.


2/16/02 09:45 hrs Working Church Fire @ 250 Booth St (Cecil, MD)

While on a cover-up assignment in Cecil County, MD (3,13,14), E7-4 was dispatched to a building fire reported as a church on fire. E7-4 arrived on scene with fire showing from the front and collapse of an exterior porch/overhang. Due to the local company working on another fire, Aetna was also dispatched on the first alarm, providing Squrt 7 and Ladder 9. While additional companies were enroute, E7-4 advanced a 3" attack line to knockdown all exterior fire before taking an 1-3/4" handline to the interior. Ladder 9 provided ventilation and Squrt 7 assisted with interior overhaul. The church was occupied at the time of the fire, however all occupants were able to evacuate through exits in the rear. No injuries were reported.


2/13/02 17:47 hrs House Fire @ 1428 Appleton Rd (Cecil, MD)

At 17:47 hrs, Aetna was dispatched as an engine company assist to Cecil County, MD (3,13,14) for a reported working house fire. E9-1 and Squrt 7 made the response with E9-1 arriving seconds after the first-in local's engine. E9-1 pulled a 1-3/4" handline to back-up the first line while other members ventilated and overhauled a kitchen that had caught fire. Squrt 7 assisted with exterior operations and salvage/overhaul. Fire damage was confined to the kitchen, no injuries were reported, and Aetna units cleared by 18:37.


2/7/02 17:59 hrs MVC w/Entrapment @ Capitol Trail/Harmony Rd

At 17:59 hrs, Aetna was dispatched for a MVC with entrapment. B9, E9-1, and Rescue 8 made the initial response arriving to find the driver and passenger entrapped within one of two vehicles. Utilizing the combo tool, E9-1 made access through the driver-side door to free the driver in approximately 9 minutes. Due to the passenger's injuries, roof removal was required and the second patient was extricated after approximately 22 minutes. Chief 98 (Kavanagh) had command, Assistant Chief 98B (Eichinger) oversaw the extrication, and all units cleared by 19:00 hrs.


1/31/02 16:35 hrs MVC w/Entrapment @ E. Cleveland Av/McKees Ln

At 16:35 hrs, Aetna was dispatched for a MVC with entrapment and person not alert. E9-1 made the initial response and arrived to find the driver of one vehicle entrapped. Utilizing the combo hydraulic tool, E9-1 had the driver free in approximatly seven minutes. Medic 3 and A8 treated and transported the patient to CER. Deputy 7 (Welch) had command, Captain 9 oversaw the extrication, and all units cleared by 1732 hrs.


1/30/02 19:38 hrs House Fire @ 216 Barnwell Lane

At 1938 hrs, Aetna was dispatched for a fire alarm investigation. E7-4 made the single engine response. While enroute, dispatch advised E7-4 of a call from the residence stating fire in a bedroom and the box was filled sending Christiana (3,6,12) as mutual aid. Soon after, E7-4 marked on scene with smoke showing and advanced an initial 1-3/4" attack line to a 2nd floor bedroom and put a quick knock-down on the fire. Additional members of the crew assisted in ventilation and establishing a water supply. One resident was treat for burns to the hands at CER. Chief 98 (Kavanagh) had command, Assistant Chief 78B (Debold) had the exterior, and Captain 7 (Malone) led the initial attack line.


1/27/02 02:39 hrs MVC w/Entrapments @ 1900 S. College Av (Rt. 896)

At 0239 hrs, Aetna was dispatched to a MVC with entrapment. Ambulance B9 was first on scene reporting one subject trapped. Upon arrival of E9-1, rescue work began on a car pushed onto a hill and discovery of a second vehicle with entrapment was made. Rescue 8 arrived a few minutes later to begin the second extrication. Both subjects were freed approximately 20 minutes into the incident. A8 and B9 both transported to CER under assistance of Medic 5 as did LifeNet 65 (MediVac). Deputy 8 (Kreer) had command, Deputy 7 (Welch) oversaw extrication, and all units cleared by 0330 hrs.


1/26/02 14:45 hrs Helpless Feline Rescue @ Anglin Drive

In a call as traditional as fireman-poles and dalmations, Aetna members rescued a cat in a tree this afternoon that had been stuck for over 24 hours. Members worked for about 15 minutes to rescue "Ozzie" 25 feet up. Although "Ozzie" seemed quite indifferent to his rescue, his owner was very relieved.



1/18/02 08:07 hrs MVC w/Entrapment @ I95 NB/South Chapel St.

At 0807 hrs, Aetna was dispatched to a MVC with entrapment. A9 was first on scene reporting one subject trapped. E91 arrived soon after utilizing the Paladin tool to perform a quick extrication of the driver through the driver's side. A9 and B9 each transported to CER and all units cleared by 0837.

Late Wednesday morning, Aetna recieved a call to assist the police on a welfare check for a resident of Thorn Lane. Police and firefighters found the resident dead with seven monitor lizards (ranging up to 6ft), a cat, and numerous madagascan hissing cockroaches roaming the apartment. It appeared as if the man had been partially consumed by his "pet" lizards. Sparking national news, the lizards have now been relocated to a zoo in Maryland where their past will not be revealed.

1/11/02 17:27 hrs MVC w/ Entrapment @ 931 South Chapel Street

At 17:27 hrs, Aetna was dispatched to an PI 10-10 (MVC). With multiple occurring alarms in other areas of the district, only B9 and E9-1 made the initial response. While en route, it was reported that subjects were trapped and B9 arrived to find two vehicles with both drives entrapped. E9-1 began extrication on one vehicle while crew members from B9 and E9-1 worked on the second. Rescue 3 was requested due to the length of time required to extricate one patient, but was not utilized. 8-8B (Witzke) had command and all units cleared by 18:25 hrs.

At 17:07 hrs, Aetna was dispatched as a rescue company to assist Christiana (3,6,12) on a building fire. Mill Creek (2,21) was dispatched as a ladder company. Deputy 6 went on-scene reporting heavy fire through the roof with multiple exposures. Rescue 8 and Squrt 7 made the response from Aetna, with Squrt 7 being instructed to set-up on side 3. Crews from Rescue 8 and Squrt 7 assisted in forcible-entry through multiple garage doors, extinguishment with 1-3/4" hand lines, and overhaul. Squrt 7's boom was placed into service midway through the incident. A series of industrial garages comprised the burning structure. The cause is under investigation.


12/31/01 15:33 hrs House Fire @ 17 Brentwood Lane

At 15:33 hrs, Aetna was dispatched to a house fire with reported smoke in the residence. Mutual aid was sent from Cecil County, MD. E9-3 was first on-scene with 9-8C (Bowerson) reporting fire showing from a second floor window. E9-3 stretched a 1-3/4" hand line and extinguished all fire in a second floor bedroom. Crews from Squrt 7, E8-2, and Rescue 8 assisted with hand line operation, ventilation, search & rescue, and overhaul. Five cats, four dogs, and a bird were rescued by Rescue 8 and E8-2. Deputy 9 (Meredith) had command, no injuries were reported, and all units cleared by 17:06 hrs.


12/31/01 01:56 hrs MVC w/Entrapment @ Ogletown Rd/Red Mill Rd

At 01:56 hrs, Aetna was dispatched along with Medic 3 to a MVC with entrapment. A8 was the initial unit on scene reporting three patients, two of which were trapped and priority one traumas. E9-3 arrived on scene and began extricating the patients with a hydraulic combo tool. Rescue 8 established command and assisted with patient care and staging of additional tools. Both patients were extricated by 02:11 hrs. A7, A8, and B3 all transported to CER with M3 and M6 providing ALS. Deputy 8 (Kreer) had command.


12/25/01 22:04 hrs Building Fire @ 2470 Pulaski Hwy

At 22:04 hrs, Aetna was dispatched for a building fire with reported fire in the office. Singerly (3,13,14 Cecil County, MD) was dispatched as mutual aid. Assistant Chief 8-8C (Hendricks) arrived on scene with smoke showing and all occupants accounted for. At that time, Christiana was dispatched on the road immediately providing four engines and a ladder. E3-6 laid in and E6-5 advanced an 1-3/4" hand line. The fire was contained to the area of origin. Deputy 9 (Meredith) had command, no injuries were reported, and all units cleared by 23:38hrs.


12/17/01 13:15 hrs Kitchen Fire @ 4 Fairway Road

At 13:15 hrs, Aetna was dispatched to a building fire with a report of a kitchen on fire. Mill Creek was dispatched as mutual aid. E9-3 arrived on scene with smoke showing from a rear third floor window. Police officers on scene stated they had been unable to make the third floor due to smoke, but stated occupants of the apartment had exited. An 1-3/4" hand line was advanced and all remaining fire was extinguished in the kitchen. E21-7 and Squrt 7 also made the response. Incident was under control at 13:26 hrs and all units cleared by 13:55 hrs.


12/13/01 19:40 hrs Hazardous Materials Incident @ Brown Lab (U of D)

At 19:40 hrs, Aetna was dispatched to a hazardous materials incident in Brown Lab of the University of Delaware. E9-3, B9, and UD-1 responded to find a small spill of Ethyl Bromo Acetate which had contaminated one subject. UD-1 transported the patient to Christiana Hospital and the incident was turned over to the University Occupational Health Department. Deputy 9 (Klima) had command.


12/11/01 12:23hrs Third Alarm Assist in Northeast, MD

At 12:23 hrs, Aetna and Christiana (3,6,12) units were dispatched as third alarm units on a marina fire in Northeast, MD. While en route, Christiana units and Squrt 7 were assigned to station cover-ups and E9-1 was requested continue to the scene. E9-1 assisted with minor extinguishment and overhaul. No injuries were reported. The marina was unoccupied at the time of the fire.


12/5/01 16:24hrs Fatal MVC w/rollover & ejection @ 896/Four Seasons

At 16:24hrs, Aetna units were dispatched along with Medic 6 and Trooper 4 to a MVC with rollover and ejection. A8, B9, and E9-3 made the initial response and arrived on-scene to find two vehicles located approximately 100 yards apart with one vehicle on its roof and its driver laying on the ground 50' away. B9 treated the driver with M6, who was unconscious with labored breathing and packaged him for transport in T4 while A8 transported the other vehicle's occupants. The ejected patient was later pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital. This was the second fatal for Aetna and the seventh for Delaware on Wednesday. 9-8C (Witzke) had command.


12/5/01 13:46hrs Fatal MVC @ Frazer/Frenchtown Rd

At 13:46hrs, Aetna units were dispatched along with Medic 6 and Trooper 4 (medivac) to a MVC with a subject not alert. E6-5 and A12 were sent due to being on the road near the incident. A8, A7, and E9-3 made the response and arrived to find one vehicle with significant intrusion (>12") on the driver side door and the other vehicle with front-end damage. A12 had one patient already packaged and was performing resuscitative efforts along with M6. A7 transported the other driver who was in stable condition. 8 Captain 1 (Bowerson) had command.


12/1/01 21:56hrs Fatal MVC @ 3 Fenwick Ct

At 21:56 hrs, Aetna units were dispatched along with Medic 3 and Trooper 4 (medivac) to a single vehicle collision with rollover in the development of The Woods at Louviers. E93, Rescue 8, and A7 responded and upon arrival of E9-3, crews found one subject laying outside an SUV and one subject inside, pulseless and apneic. Trooper 4 transported one Trauma Alert and A7 transported the second subject to CER with M3 who attempted resuscitative efforts. It was determined the vehicle left Paper Mill Rd traveling over an embankment into a construction lot before striking a back-hoe which sheared off the roof of the SUV. Over the course of the incident, crews utilized thermal imaging cameras and Trooper 4's FLIR due to a reported ejected third subject (negative results). Deputy 9 (Klima) had command and all units cleared by 0322hrs.


11/26/01 22:30hrs Building Fire @ 611 Oakdale Rd

While packing up from a small fire at 541 Oakdale Rd, a tenant of the complex alerted units to an apartment on fire a few buildings away. E8-2 was first on scene reporting smoke showing from the roof line with subjects trapped. Mutual aid was dispatched from Christiana (3,6,12) and Mill Creek (2,21). Quint 3-7 was first-in truck and set-up on side 1. Second and third engines, E9-3 & Squrt 7, went to the rear and sent in crews for search & rescue and extinguishment. An 1-3/4" hand line went to the third floor while firefighters from E8-2 and E9-3 removed tenants still inside. Firefighters from B3 and E9-3 quickly knocked down a bedroom and bathroom on fire. Second-in truck, Ladder 9, assisted in removal of tenants and ventilating the roof. Chief 9-8 had command, Deputy 8 had the interior, Assistant Chief 9-8B had operations, one firefighter suffered smoke inhalation, and all units cleared by 0100hrs.


11/26/01 18:03hrs Fatal Trailer Fire @ 2109 Oak St

At 18:03hrs on Monday evening, Aetna units were dispatched as a rescue company assist for Mill Creek (2,21) on a working trailer fire. Upon arrival of Squrt 21, fire showing was reported. Rescue 21 and E9-1 were second and third in and helped to establish multiple 1-3/4" hand lines. An exterior attack was initiated due to a fully involved trailer with partial collapse in the rear. Broken live electrical lines were a hazard sparking off the of the metal roof and sagging into the immediate area around the trailer. Upon extinguishment of the fire, one victim was found dead in the rear of the trailer. Chief 21-8 had command and no injuries were reported.


11/16/01 17:08hrs MVC w/Entrapment @ Capitol Trail/Possum Park Rd

At 17:08hrs on Friday evening, units were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Capitol Trail and Possum Park Road. Delaware State Police were first on-scene reporting two injuries, however upon arrival of ambulance B9, it was discovered the driver of one vehicle was trapped. E9-1 made the initial response with Rescue 8 following soon after and extricated the driver in approximately 10 minutes. All units cleared by 18:15hrs.


11/13/01 Live Burn Training @ 369 Elkton Road

Tuesday evening, Aetna firefighters participated in a training exercise off of Elkton Rd. After acquiring two abandoned structures, the units were filled with matresses, furniture, and straw and ignited in several training evolutions over the course of the evening. Three member attack, search, safety, and ground crews rotated giving many new members their first live fire experience. Aetna firefighters participate in training at the Delaware State Fire School Burn Center many times a year, as well as other in-house classroom and hands-on exercises each week. Deputy 9 (Klima) had command and several senior firefighters from around the County and the Wilmington Fire Department assisted.


11/13/0118:06hrs Fatal Vehicle Collision @ Old Baltimore/Iron Hill Rd

At 1806hrs on Tuesday evening, Aetna units were dispatched for a MVC with entrapment and fire. Trooper 4 (MediVac) and a paramedic unit were also dispatched. Assistant Chief 8-8C (Hendricks) was first on-scene reporting one vehicle fully involved and a total of two subjects trapped. E9-1 arrived shortly prior to E9-3 with E9-1 working to extinguishing the car on fire and E9-3 on freeing the trapped subject. Over the course of the incident, 6 BLS units (A7,A8,B9,B3,B6,B11) and Trooper 4 would transport patients with 3 ALS units (M2D,M3D,M6D). New Castle county staffs a total of seven ALS units. A 27 year old female was dead on-scene from significant burns. Her two children (ages 5 and 9) and both drivers of the vehicles remain in critical condition at Christiana Hospital. 11/13/01 00:48hrs Working House Fire @ 817 Broadfield Dr

At 0048 hrs early Tuesday morning, Aetna (7,8,9) units were dispatched for a working house fire at 817 Broadfield Dr. Mutual aid was dispatched from Mill Creek (2,21) and Christiana (3,6,12). Chief 9-8 was first on-scene of a split-level single family dwelling reporting fire showing through the roof. E12-5 and E9-3 arrived simultaneously with E12-5 taking a hydrant. E12-5 advanced an initial 1-3/4" hand line through the front door and into the back-left bedroom on the 2nd floor which was fully involved. E9-3 advanced a 2nd 1-3/4" hand line to the second floor and extinguished fire throughout side 3 and the part of the attic. An additional line went to the basement with E7-4 where fire around a wood-burning stove was extinguished. Chief 9-8 (Kavanaugh) had command, Assistant Chief 9-8B (Eichinger) had the interior, no injuries were reported, and all units cleared by 0345hrs.



11/9/01 14:09hrs Working House Fire @ 70 West Mill Station Dr

At 14:09 hrs on Friday afternoon, Aetna (7,8,9) units were dispatched for a working house fire at 70 West Mill Dr. with fire reported on the second floor. Mutual aid was dispatched from Mill Creek (2,21) and Christiana (3,6,12). Engine 9-3 was first on scene reporting a two story single family dwelling with fire through the roof. E9-3's crew lead off with a 2-1/2" hand line and put a quick knock on the first floor before advancing to the second floor. Additional firefighters from Squrt 7 advanced an 1-3/4" to the second floor for additional extinguishment and other hand lines were stretched to the rear and as back-up. Significant fire damage was suffered throughout the second floor, roof, and living room on the first floor. Deputy 9 (Klima) had command, no injuries were reported, and all units cleared by 17:00 hrs.



11/5/01 19:44hrs Working House Fire @ 51 Kenmar Drive

At 19:44 hrs on Monday evening, Aetna (7,8,9) units were dispatched for a house fire next to 49 Kenmar Drive. Mutual aid was sent from neighboring district Christiana (3,6,12) as additional engine companies. 2nd Assistant Chief Witzke (98C) was first on scene reporting fire from the rear and unit 3-7 was first in. Engine 8-2 laid a supply line to 3-7 while firefighters advanced an 1-3/4" attack line through the front door. Engine 9-3 also laid supply due to initial difficulties on 8-2. Other hand lines were stretched to the rear and as back-up and firefighters put a quick knock-down on the fire. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and a small dog was rescued. Assistant Chief 9-8C (Witzke) had command and all units were clear by 22:30hrs.
