MVC with Entrapment

posted Feb 6, 2012 5:18 PM by Charles Mitchell
On January 24th at 02:24 Aetna, along with Paramedics 746 and 587, was dispatched for an MVC reported with entrapment on Route 896 Southbound at the off ramp to Glasgow Avenue.  Ambulances A-7 and A-8, Engine 9-5, Rescue 8, EMS 9, and Chief 9-8 all made the response.  9-5 arrived at 02:33 to find a single vehicle crash involving a small pick up truck versus a telephone poll.  The truck had impacted the poll at the driver's door, pinning the driver inside.  9-5 confirmed the entrapment and set up for extrication.  The vehicle was stabilized and hydraulic extrication tools were placed in service.  As the EMS units arrived, they began providing patient care on the single victim.  First the roof and windshield were removed from the vehicle.  It was then determined that better access to the driver door would be obtained if the vehicle could be moved off of the pole.  Rescue 8's front winch was utilized to move the vehicle off of the pole.  Crews then removed the driver side door.  Extrication was completed at 02:57.  The patient was then transported to Christiana ER by A-7 and ALS.  9-8 placed the incident under control as extrication was completed and all FD units were clear by 03:25.

Units on scene: A-7, A-8, Rescue 8, 9-5, EMS 9, 9-8, ALS 16, ALS 24, Paramedic 587,Paramedic 746, Delaware State Police, and Aetna Fire Police.
