MVC with Door Removal

posted Aug 27, 2012, 3:59 PM by Charles Mitchell
On August 21st at 00:36 Aetna was alerted for a MVC with injuries at the intersection of South College Avenue and Old Baltimore Pike.  Ambulances A-8, A-9, and Engine 7-4 all responded.  Deputy 9 arrived at 00:42, followed by A-8 at 00:43.  They found a 2 vehicle crash involving a car and a tractor trailer, with the car having been struck in the driver's door by the tractor trailer.  After a quick assessment it was determined that the door could not be opened, so Deputy 9 advised 7-4 that they would need to use their extrication tools.  ALS was also requested due to the patients' injuries.  This would bring NCC EMS Medic 6 to the scene as well.  7-4 arrived at 00:45 and the crew set up for the extrication.  The vehicle was stabilized and the Holmatro combination tool was utilized in order to remove the door.  Extrication was completed at 00:50.  A-8 transported 1 patient to Christiana ER with Medic 6 and there were no other injuries.  Deputy 9 placed the incident under control at 00:53.  All units were clear the scene by 01:09 and the incident was turned over to Delaware State Police.
