At 1549 hours on 8/30/2014, Aetna was alerted for an engine to assist the Singerly Fire Company of Elkton, MD on a working residential fire at 1063 Singerly Road.  Engines 9-3 (6) and SQURT 7 (6) made the response, with Ladder 9 (4) and Chief 9-8 (Schall) added on the 2nd alarm.  Crews arrived to find a 1 story single-family-dwelling with a well advanced attic fire.  9-3 stretched a 2nd supply line and 9-3 and S-7 advanced two handlines interior.  Crews knocked down the fire on the first floor but had issues accessing the attic fire due to a plaster-and-lathe ceiling with plywood on top and the attic stairs burned out.  With high heat, conditions not improving, and fire located in the walls and possibly basement, crews were forced to change their strategy.  Ladder 9 arrived and threw ground ladders giving access to the A side dormer roof for part of 9-3's crew who were able to knock down the bulk of the attic fire from the exterior.  SQURT 7's crew located additional fire in the basement and advanced another line to control that.  Crews operated on scene for over 2 hours in a variety of roles and cycled through rehab before picking up and returning to service.  Outstanding, professional work by the 17 firefighters who responded.  Engine 8-2 was staffed in district during the incident and thanks to Engine 23-6 (Minquas) who covered Station 9 in our absence handling several incidents.  "Service for Others"
