House Fire

Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Co was dispatched for a residential fire in the Binns Tract section of west Newark, shortly before 10 AM.

Fire units arrived in the 800 block of Lehigh Rd to find smoke showing from a single family dwelling. The residents of the home had exited safely and were standing outside in the snow and sleet.

Approximately 40 firefighters and EMS personnel from several area companies contained the fire to the second floor of the home. The house sustained fir...e and heat damage to the second floor, and smoke damage throughout. 5 adults and one child were displaced as the home was deemed uninhabitable. The Red Cross was called to assist the family with temporary lodging.

The fire was under control in 20 minutes. Firefighters were on the scene for 90 minutes.

During the residential fire, fire department units handled many other calls for service, including alarm bells, trees down and utility wires on fire.

The house fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office.

There were no injuries.

Christiana Fire, Cranston Heights Fire Company, Mill Creek Fire Company - Stations 2&21, Singerly Fire Company, and New Castle County Paramedics all responded.
