Fire at University of Delaware

posted Oct 22, 2014, 12:08 PM by Jeffrey Sands, Assistant Chief 7-8B   [ updated Oct 22, 2014, 12:18 PM ]

At 1141 today Aetna along with mutual aid departments were alerted to a building fire with the possible involvement of hazardous materials.  First arriving units were given information from the University of Delaware Police as to which lab had the fire.  Crews extinguished a small machine fire in a lab.  The lab was labeled with chemical and radiological warnings so all measures were taken to protect responders and anyone involved.  Readings conducted by the crews and University Office of Environmental Health and Safety were normal.  As a precaution decontamination was performed on all firefighters that went in the building.  No injuries were reported and the scene was placed under control at 1242.  The scene has been turned over to the University for cleanup and investigation.
