Fatal House Fire in Newark

On Saturday June 28, 2014 at 2022 hours, Aetna and mutual aid units were alerted to a house fire in the 500 block of A St, Windy Hills.

The fire department arrived to find heavy smoke pouring from the split level, single family dwelling, with fire coming through the roof. A victim was removed from the home by a firefighter who was in the area at the time of the alarm.  Keith Stockman of Good Will Fire Co of New Castle, a 27 year veteran of the fire service, removed the 65 year old male resident of the home as firefighters arrived at 2026 hours.  

The victim was transported to the hospital by Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Co ambulance along with paramedics from New Castle County EMS.  The victim was pronounced dead at the Christiana Hospital.  One firefighter was treated on the scene for minor injuries.

Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Co, along with 4 other area fire departments responded to the fire.  A total of 56 firefighters brought the fire under control in 25 minutes.  Fire and EMS crews from Newark remained on the scene until 2200 hours.

The fire is under investigation by the Newark City Fire Marshal and the Newark Police Department.
