The Aetna 125th Anniversary Committee proudly announces that the Washington DC Fire Department Emerald Society Pipes and Drums will march with the Company in 3 parades during 2013 our anniversary year. The DC Emerald Society established the band in 2002. Aetna member Joe Papariello, a DC Firefighter is a piper in band. The DC Pipes and Drums are a premier fire department marching band. The band competes throughout the eastern seaboard.

Aetna is scheduled to march in 4 parades with music this year. There is a rich Aetna tradition of parading. In the earliest days Aetna organized a marching band from our own membership.  In 1988 100 members marched in the DVFA Convention Parade held on Main St. in Newark. Aetna won its only Governors Cup in 1954 in the DVFA Parade held in Wilmington. During the heyday of Fire Company Carnival Parades Aetna paraded almost every week during the summer in nearby communities. The company still participates in the Hacks Point MD parade to this day.

The parade schedule is:

Saturday afternoon May 18th –Parade Practice with members of the DC Pipes and Drums followed by dinner and a party at Station 8

Sunday May 19th-Newark Memorial Day Parade with DC Pipes and Drums

Saturday August 3rd- CVVFA Convention Parade Shippensburg PA with Citizens Fire Company No. 1 of Newport PA Drum and Bugle Corps

Saturday September 14- DVFA Conference Parade Dover

Saturday September 28-PA State Firemen’s Association Convention Parade West Chester

Aetna members who are in need of uniform alterations should contact Director Mike Downey as soon as possible. Every member who participates in a parade this year will receive a 125th Anniversary Service Bar for their dress uniform.
