Aetna is hosting Traditions Training and their Company Officer Development Course on September 20th and 21st.   A few spots are still available for $150/person, if interested please contact chief@aetnahhl.org.  The class will be held at the Embassy Suites on South College Ave, start time is 0800 and lunch will be provided both days.

The Officer Development Course will focus on the fundamental skills that are necessary to be an effective company/command-level officer. An effective fire officer has the ability and responsibility to lead both on and off the fireground. The focus of this 16-hour course will focus on operational considerations, primarily at structural fires. Specific emphasis will be placed on effectively “breaking-down” incidents into manageable segments. Additionally, the prospective officer will be provided the opportunity to demonstrate the skills learned through realistic scenarios while receiving immediate feedback from experienced instructors.

Topics discussed include:

  • “Command Presence” & The Combat Ready Fire Officer
  • Incident Size-Up
  • Structural vs. Contents Fires
  • Go / Don’t Go?
  • On-Scene & Situation Reports: What to say & what not to say…
  • Essential Fire-ground Tactics:
  • Engine Company
  • Truck Company
  • Rapid Intervention
  • Initial Fire-ground Operations
  • “Breaking Down” the Incident
  • NIMS for the Real World Fire Service
  • Incident Documentation Techniques
  • Personnel Accountability
  • Basic MAYDAY Management

Class will conclude with a series of simulated operational exercises. These will challenge the students existing skills & new knowledge by placing them in a leadership role during a simulated incident. They will be challenged to manage the incident appropriately, including all elements (documentation, accountability, tactics, etc…). These scenarios are enhanced by advanced computer simulation, fire audio, and role-playing.
