Aetna Receives Award Delaware Recreation & Parks Society Award

On February 23, 2012, the Delaware Recreation & Parks Society, at their annual meeting in Rehoboth Beach, presented the Friends of Recreation award to Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company. This award is given to an individual or organization who has responded in an unusual manner to recreational programs or facilities in the state.  Aetna was nominated by the City of Newark Department of Parks and Recreation for its range of cooperative efforts and support. Specifically mentioned were the EMS and first aid services, the availability of fire station 9 facilities and support of their fire police during large-scale citywide events. Also recognized, was Aetna's support for individual events and activities, particularly Safety Town.

Present to receive the recognition was Past Chief Larry Thompson, Past Director Alan Silverman, and Fire Safety Specialist Diane Silverman. A plaque was presented.

Our support for the annual Safety Town program was singled out for special recognition. This program has been supported by Aetna since its inception more than 30 years ago. Aetna members have contributed such items as plywood miniature buildings, including a fire station, and a pedal-powered fire engine. Fire and EMS apparatus, staffed by Aetna drivers, firefighters and EMTs are displayed and their functions described on "emergency vehicle day." An Aetna member, the late Ellsworth Lynn, top hat and all, was "mayor" of safety town for several years.

As an Aetna Fire Prevention Committee Member, Diane Silverman was recognized for her adult and children's fire safety programs, which have been presented every year since the beginning of Safety Town. Also receiving recognition were the many fire station tours which were part of other city day camps.

EMT/FF Irene Livita-Harris was recognized for her Safety Town first aid, children's fire safety and helper dog programs.
