Joining Aetna H., H.,& L. Co.

The Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder Co. is a volunteer organization that serves the greater Newark, DE community with fire protection and emergency medical attention. Membership with the fire department is open to all community members 18 years of age and older. New members must undergo a probationary membership period fullfilling predetermined requirements before full membership is granted. However, this period does not restrict the new recruit from engaging in fire and EMS activities.

Interested community members should download an application, or stop by any of the four stations (7-Elkton Road, 8-Ogletown Road, 9-Academy Street, 10-Old County Road) and request one. This application will provide background information on the applicant as well as grant Aetna the right to complete a thorough background investigation. New members are brought into the company approximately six times a year, once every two months, and will be contacted by a representative several weeks after an application is submitted to notify them of the next step in the process.

Once accepted, new members are required to undergo an orientation training weekend that familiarizes new members with basic operations of the fire ground and ambulance services. Clearance to ride apparatus is contingent upon successful completion of this training weekend. New members then begin their probationary period (no less than 1 year, but recruits must be at least 20 years old before full-membership is granted).

This probationary period is the time where the new recruit will learn company operations, fire-fighting techniques, and EMS services. Training is available through Aetna and also through the Delaware State Fire School. During the probationary period, new members are required to complete 54 total hours of training. These 54 hours must include at least 24 hours with Aetna, 6 hours of rescue, and 6 hours of EMS. All 54 training hours may be completed in-house with Aetna, however training at the Delaware State Fire School is encouraged. In addition, probationary members must complete at least 180 Fire/EMS calls, 24 hours of service, and at least 6 regular company meetings before their period ends.

Contingent upon successful completion of these requirements and limited disciplinary action, probationary members will be granted full-membership with all related privileges.

The Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder Co. Volunteer Fire Department is an organization devoted to "Services for Others" and is looking for highly motivated individuals to become a part of the department. If you feel you may have what it takes to become an active firefighter and/or EMS service provider in the Newark community, the Aetna H., H., and L. Co. encourages you to pick up an application at any one of the four stations and apply as soon as possible!
