7/12/08 - MVC with Entrapment

MVC with entrapment

On July 12th at 1947 hrs Aetna was alerted for Rescue 8 to assist Singerly Fire Company on an MVC with Entrapment / Multiple Victims at the intersection of Elk Mills Road and Russell Road in Elkton, Maryland. Prior to arrival, Deputy 7 was on scene requesting Rescue 8 to place the large preconnected spreaders in service as well as assemble the rams for a dash lift. On arrival crew met with command and placed rescue tools in service. This was a single vehicle MVC with four priority one patients. Crew from Rescue 8 along with Deputy 7 and members of Singerly worked together to free one trapped patient as well as performing patient care and packaging. Three patients were flown to Baltimore Shock Trauma via Troopers 6 and 1, and one patient was transported by ground to Christiana ER. Scene was placed under control at 2042 hrs.


6/10/08 - Engine Assists at Mill Creek House Fire

On June 10th at 18:43 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched to assist Mill Creek (2-21) on a working house fire at 125 Spruce Glen Drive. Engine 9-3 made the response shortly after dispatch. Engine 21-6 was first to arrive; reporting smoke showing from a 2 story single family dwelling. Crews placed 1 3/4" hand lines in service and advanced them to the 2nd floor in order to extinguish the fire. 9-3 arrived at 18:54, and the crew was instructed to advance an additional 1 3/4" hand line to the 2nd floor in order to assist interior crews. A 400' 1 3/4" hand line off of 9-3 was placed in service, and advanced to the 2nd floor. The crew operated in 2 rooms on the 2nd floor. They found small amounts of fire, that were extinguished. The crew also began opening up and checking for extension. Some hot spots were found in the attic as well, and they were subsequently extinguished. The crew was relieved for a short time for some rehab. A little while later they were sent back inside to assist with additional overhaul. 9-3's crew operated on scene for just under an hour before being released by command at 19:48.


5/27/08 - Engine Goes to Another Fire in Elkton

On May 27th at 14:53 Hrs, Aetna was dispatched to assist Singerly (Cecil County 3-13-14) on a house fire at 1538 Appleton Road. Engine 9-3 made the response shortly after dispatch. Squrt 13 and Chief 13 were first to arrive, reporting smoke showing from a single story vacant dwelling. 9-3 arrived at 15:04 as the 2nd engine. 9-3's crew was sent by command to assist the crew from 13 inside. Crews found the bulk of the fire in a closet on the first floor, and it was quickly extinguished with a water can. 9-3's crew utilized a booster line to further wet down the area. The crew also checked for extension in the basement and attic, searched the structure, and provided ventilation. Command placed the fire under control at 15:22. 13 Units were held on scene and 9-3 cleared.


5/27/08 - Vehicle Lift Collapse Leaves 2 Injured

On May 27th at 13:10 Hrs, Aetna, along with Medic 9 and ALS 23, was dispatched for a worker trapped under a vehicle lift in a muffler shop at 738 East Chestnut Hill Road. Ambulance A-10, Engine 7-4, and Ladder 9 all responded. Ambulance A-16 (Elsmere) had just cleared Christiana Hospital, and they were advised to respond as well. As units were responding Fire Board reported additional information that the trapped worker had been freed. A-16 was first to arrive at 13:15, followed closely by Medic 9. A-10 arrived a few minutes later. EMS crews found 1 worker that had sustained severe leg trauma, and a 2nd worker that had sustained minor injuries. A box truck had been up on the lift, when the rear of the lift collapsed. Crews from A-16, Medic 9, A-10, and ALS 23 worked together in order to immobilize the patient with the serious injuries. As 7-4 and Ladder 9 arrived, those crews were tasked with immobilizing the 2nd patient. The first patient was placed in A-16, and then transported to Christiana ER with Medic 9 as a trauma alert. The 2nd patient was transported to Christiana ER by A-10 with ALS 23. With both patients transported, the incident was placed under control at 13:22. The scene was turned over to Delaware State Police for the investigation, and all units were clear by 13:38.
