MEETING WITH STATE
LEGISLATORS
On
Monday November 21, officers and members of Aetna Hose, Hook and
Ladder Co. met with elected state officials whose districts are in
our fire service area. Our purpose was to provide information to be
used to measure the impact of upcoming State budget deliberations on
our communities’ emergency services
A Presentation
was given to provide background about our role and responsibilities
in delivering services. We summarize the variety and depth of
emergency services Aetna provides, and reviewed our budget
expenditures, focusing on economizing, meeting industry and
governmental service standards as well as meeting unfunded
governmental mandates. We also discussed how the dollars provided by
the state and local governments are leveraged to maximize our
services.

DEVIL’S
NIGHT: TWO WORKING FIRES IN 6 HOURS
At 1823
on October 30, 2009, Engine 93 and Rescue 8 were alerted to
respond on a townhouse fire on Cobble Creek Curve (Christiana’s
first due). Engine 93 arrived just behind Rescue Engine 34 with
fire showing from the second floor. E93’s crew proceeded to
complete a primary search on both divisions and assisted Rescue
Engine 126 with advancing an attack line through heavy fire
conditions. E93’s driver also threw four ground ladders to all
sides of the structure and assisted RE34 with establishing their
water supply. Rescue 8 arrived and was assigned to relieve interior
crews and overhaul the affected areas. Rescue 8 was cleared
at 2024, and E93 was held for the duration of the alarm until
being released by command.

Later that
evening at 0239, Engine 82 and Ladder 9 responded on a house
fire at 37 Stallion Dr (Christiana’s first due). First arriving
units found a room off on the second floor and quickly extinguished
the same. Command held the units on scene and quickly scaled
the assignment back.
ANOTHER
WORKING HOUSE FIRE
At 2005
on October 26, 2009, departments in the surrounding area were
alerted for “the fire in the garage” on Tinsley Ct (Christiana’s
first due). Additional reports also advised of the possibility
of two individuals trapped within the residence. Engine 93 and
Squrt 7 responded and arrived 3rd and 5th due respectively.
With heavy fire showing from both floors and attic, E93’s crew
advanced a line to side Charlie, making an attack in the Charlie
and Delta quadrants of division one. Squrt 7 was assigned with
laddering the rear of the structure for means of egress. All
searches on all divisions proved negative, and due to rapidly
advancing fire conditions throughout the attic space and intermittent
water supply issues, all crews were shortly evacuated from the
structure.Once
crews reentered, the rest of the fire was knocked down quickly.
Squrt 7, E93, and E82 further assisted with hitting remaining
hot spots and overhauling the affected areas. Squrt 7 and E82
were released within 2.5 hours, and E93 was held for the duration
of the incident, returning to service at 2243.
